Hi would anybody consider this... wonder what the running costs would be on fuel?

LPG tank must be in the boot which is a little awkward.

Really? Why would you even consider it?

I know there is economic sense in it, but I often feel a performance car being fed on gas isn't a good sign.

As someone who owns an LPG M5 (E39), and who is the person who paid for the conversion, an insight into why someone would gas one, the benefits, and downsides.

WHY GAS IT?
Gas is currently 73.9p per litre and has not risen in price since November (unlike petrol). I love M5's or E39 M5's anyway but usually do at least 100 miles a day. Try tipping £90 a fill in 3 times a week (which I did on my previous M5 for 16 months) and gas starts to make sense.
It's still an M5 with all the toys and the big tyres/suspension etc.

POWWWWERRRRR as Mr. Clarkson says.
Conventional wisdom is that you loose 10% of the power running on LPG, so I'm only at 360bhp!! I'd be the first to admit I'm no "driving God" but I can honestly say I feel no difference in power at all.

THE VALUE
Yes I suspect I may have ripped the arse out of the future value of the car. I bought a mint 00 E39 M5 with only 48,000 miles last March and have put 20k miles on since then so I'm ripping the value out of it on a daily basis anyway.

IF YOU CANT AFFORD TO FUEL IT....
My car gets looked after by my tame mechanic an ex-BM mechanic, who treats it like it was his own. It gets serviced on the button with the proper oil, genuine BM parts and my parting words are always if it needs it, it gets it.

NOTHING IS PERFECT!!
You have to start the car on petrol and I like to run her on petrol til all the rev counter lights are out.
On really hard acceleration the car will jump back to petrol right at the top of the rev range (approx 5k rpm plus).
The tank takes up half of the boot space.

IN CONCLUSION
It wont be for everyone, and the purists may denounce it, but I'd rather drive an M5 every day than have one in the garage and drive a diesel grotbox on a daily basis.

My old RS6 used LPG. The previous owner had it fitted.
Certainly cut fuel running costs, and the car felt the same when using petrol or LPG.
My only gripe was that the LPG tank was quite small and would only give 120 miles range between fill ups.
£25 to £29 to fill it up each time. The tank was supposed to take 60 litres when empty but I could never get any more than 45 into it.

Would I have it on my M5? Yes if I was doing more mileage, but I use the car mainly at weeklends so the installation costs would take a long time to recover.

Why does it do this? Is it intentionally programmed to do it? If not, that would be a cause for concern.

I'm all for LPG conversions - I've owned an LPG 520i and put about 10,000 miles on it, and my Dad has owned two LPG cars, putting about 70,000 miles on one, with a sticky injector being the only issue he had.

I'm no expert on wheels - click here - but they look similar to my 19" M6 style wheels, albeit the tyre wall looks slightly shallower.
