model combustion engines?
Discussion
hi all,
i'm looking for a new project. i've seen quite a few homemade internal combustion engines and was wondering if there are any kits around so i can build one up, preferably a V8.
i've seen some kits for stirling engines, and lots of plans for internal combustion engines but no IC kits.
i don't have a workshop so cannot scratch build my own unfortunately.
thanks for your help chaps

Unless you are buying ready made, Conley 609 for example, I believe most engines have been home built and at the very least even if you do find a working kit (and be prepared to pay alot) you really really want a workshop to solve any issues that you will bump into. Silly little things like a single component being out of spec.
My father built a traction engine from a kit about 4 years ago and he had all sorts of problems with it, problems that only engineering experience and a very well equipped workshop(lathe, CNC etc) were able to sort out. He has scratch built as well but the time needed to just make a very simple static engine is incredible.
I must actually get some pics of my fathers model posted, it really is lovely.

not a kit, but again the price for all the machining costs isnt going to be cheap on any working small engine

that really is beautiful. oh well never mind. i think i'll have a mooch round the local rc clubs and get my old touring car fired up instead.

Unfortunately the cheapest way to do it is to go to a scrap yard and buy a V8 engine and strip it down. Because that's essentially what a working V8 model kit would be. If anything, there would be higher development overheads in a kit, and they are only made in small quantities so there are no economies of scale.
