Porsche Car Cover
Discussion
Want some advice on car covers, I am sure this has come up and I have had a look via forum search to gain some info.
Has anyone used the Porsche OE spec car covers? If so are they any good? I need an outdoor cover that is generally easy to take on put off & will not scratch paint etc.

Classic additions are good and used to be my choice but, having had both, Specialised are better IMO.http://www.classicadditions.com/

Just got a lightweight, breathable tailored outdoor cover for my 968 race car from Specialised Covers and it is superb - by far the best cover I have used. Very impressed - long wait though!
Have had about four outdoor covers from these .they are really good. Cover should really only be put on a clean car.jackal said:
Don't outdoor covers just scratch the paintwork ? Unless its an older car thats prone to rust or lacking clearcoat protection from UV/Birds mess etc.. what function do they actually serve ?
No.Like i said, if put on a clean car they keep the car perfect. They have never damaged any car i have used them with.cayman-black said:

Thanks for the info, I was worried about scratching but with a decent quality one it should be worth it for protection against the elements & birds etcGot a pretty decent one from Argos, actually. I needed it temporarily, so did not want to spend any $$, but was surprised. I forgot the size but it was probably large.
Taped seams etc etc.
As previous any cover won't harm your car, but every cover will if it's dirty. When taking a cover off the car, I first fold it over itself lengthwise, (hard to explain, but very simple, I lift each side hem over to the centreline of the vehicle, along the entire length) and only then roll it up, so that the inside/underside of the cover only ever contacts inside/underside and does not get dirty by contacting the outside as it would if I simply rolled it up.
Now is that anoraky or what.

I had a outdoor cover from Specialised for a previous roadster and would make following points.
They keep car as clean as it was when you put cover on.
It has to be tightened underbody properly as mine came slack in high wind once and then it can move about and this is what leads to the rubbing on paintwork.

the specialised covers look very smart, and are semi-tailored to fit
but im wondering if they would be more hassle to get on and off compared to an outdoor cover that is just matched to the cars size?
Hi Olia, but im wondering if they would be more hassle to get on and off compared to an outdoor cover that is just matched to the cars size?
A generic cover is guaranteed to lift off the car and come adrift when it's windy, unless additional securing straps are used. My tailored specialised cover fits like a glove, never lifts of the car during high winds and the technique used for fitment/removal (i.e. fold to the centre of the car and roll-up) is really very easy.
Without a garage at the moment I couldn't keep a nice car without the use of a quality outdoor cover to protect from fallout from nearby trees and birds!
My cars kept in a car port that's open on 2 sides(ish), so doesn't get any direct weather i.e. rain but does get exposed to dust, leaves and wind, I looked at the porsche OE outside cover and I was put off because it's not fleece lined, the indoor cover is fleece lined but not water proof, I went with the indoor cover however if I was going outdoor I would look elsewhere to be honest.

My cars live in our courtyard - listed building with a stable/garage that is a) slightly too small to get most cars in and b) full of bikes… …so I went through the process of researching car covers rather thoroughly and was forced to the conclusion that it wasn't going to work for me, because they need to be fitted when the car is clean and dry but the times when you most need them are of course when it's practically impossible to ensure either of the above: this is the middle of the Scottish Highlands, so drying can be impossible for weeks at a time and cleaning may not be possible through most of the winter as the outside taps freeze…
…so I've instead gone for a thorough detailed with Gtechniq products and hosing it down when I can, to get rid of road crud, leaf deposits and feline arse prints.
