Cleaning up the chassis!..........banghead

Now, taking into account that my last 5 cars have been brand spankers and the last 3 were Jags, I would class myself more of a ....... "don't get my hands dirty" kind of guy!

Well the Tuscan arrived and I put myself in the mindset of "lets get in there".
I've got Graham's Sagaris manual, I've got myself a nice shiny tool kit from Halfrauds, I've even got myself a nice boiler suit, rubber gloves and goggle. I look like a right proper car mechanic type! rolleyeslaugh

Anyway, back to the task at hand. A bit of chassis de-rusting, wire brush attachments and cordless drill and I'm off!
Trouble is, its not quite that easy. I have the car on axle stands and ramps, this gives me about a foot and 1/2 of crawling room. My garage is bloody freezing, my face mask directs all of my breath into my goggles which in turn steams them up! My right arm feels like it did when I found my first grott mag as a youngster and somehow, I have managed to get bits of grit and rust in my sodding ears!

Those original quotes from Fernies and RG for £300-500 for a chassis clean are starting to look a bit enticing.....But don't worry folks, I've got this far, I'll keep on plodding along and hopefully get the car back on the road by late summer (at this rate!)

Oh well, battery for the drill has just finished charging, guess that's me back off to the garage then cry

Post pics. Then you can look back at all your hard work when it's finished and think, I did that. Always a nice reward.

OP I am with you. £500 is a bargain if they do it properly. I have toyed with renting a garage with a lift to do mine.

yes some TVR specialists advertise full chassis refurb but , i got caught out on the griff with full scrape and waxoyl for £xxx.xx , only to find that waxoyl had been sprayed everywhere that was visible ! chassis, brakes , engine , coilover threads and springs, wishbones, and expensive braided hoses, all in all i probably spent more time cleaning off the visible gunk than was worth the protection paid for.mad

Yes it appeared on mine that some dick wang had literally just let of a waxoyl bomb off under mine, and it seemed they had let about 4 off too judging by the time it took.

It is a really st job and i felt the same but its very satisfying to now have a chassis i could eat of hehe

Well I've just finished the last of the wire brushing.
I must admit, I prepared myself for the worst with the waxoil, but there was barely any on it, perhaps that explains the amount of surface rust?
Tomorrow it's a lavish dousing of rustkiller, then 24hrs later I'll prime it and look at what I'll use as the final coating.
What's so special about the POR15 stuff then? Or will hammerite suffice?
Then do I waxoil or just leave it? If I do waxoil it, I will only do the chassis an not the whole underside of the car.

I used and would recomend the whole por15 kit. (de greaser, metal prep and then the actual por15) Because it all works together, it also doesn't matter if you dont remove all the rust as the por15 actually likes the rust to bond to.

Hammerite just isn't hard enough and doesnt work anywhere near as well as por15.

I used it years ago on a patch of rust on an m3. even though i never prepped it properly the rust never came back or got worse.

It sounds like a lot of work but its worth it, especially as from my pov i wanted to do it no more than once as its such a st job.

Oh and por15 will go off in this weather unlike hammerite which won't.

I have just ordered a set of new droplinks for mine and will be attacking the surface rust that has appeared.

What speed is the cordless drill that you are using? All I have is a high speed impact plug in one that is a right hand full when lying under a car!

Keep looking at the deals in B&Q and thinking about getting a cordless but worried it wont shift anything with a wire brush.

I'm using an 18v DeWalt cordless drill havent got a scoobys what the rpm is, but it works a treat. Battery lasts about an hour before it needs a recharge (which takes 40 mins) so it forces me to stop and have a brew, otherwise I would be sat there doing it for far too long.

I've ordered the POR15 starter kit, so when that gets here I'll get the job finished.

Cheers chap got the droplinks on over the weekend and rubbed down the anti roll bars and wishbones.

Out of interest what shaped wire brush did you use on the out riggers etc? The one I have is like a closed cup and of course the tourqe of the drill wants it to shoot off to the right when using it and I dont really want that to happen so close to the body work.

Dare I say, I bought my drill bits from Halfrauds, a twin pack with one 1/2" flat end and one 1/2" conical. Still had the flick off, but just sat there bracing the drill with both hands. I have no doubt that it wont be the neatest job ever done and I doubt I'll win prises on a concourse, but as long as its protected somewhat, that'll do for me!
