Hi Guys,

Happy New Year to everyone!

I've just taken the wheels off the Griff for the first time for a refurb and thought I'd change a broken headlight bulb at the same time. So I came to remove the access panel in the front arch and unfortunately the previous owner(s) have smeared the hell out of the heads which combined with rust from constantly being sprayed with water means I can't get the screws out. Has anyone come up with any particularly bright ideas for getting into this panel or will I have to drill them out?

Also if anyone has a good solution for replacing the screws with something less likely to repeat the trick I'd also be keen to hear about that.

Cheers,

Simon

Do you have access to a Dremel, hacksaw blade, file... something that might allow you cut a slot into the screw heads so that you can try and wind them out. Even if you can only get them proud of the surface a little way you could then use a pair of pliers to grab and rotate the screw head turn by turn.

Use stainless self tapping screws. You can get them from any good engineering suppiers. They won't rust again.

yes I tend to put a little bit of silicone over them to stop the vibrating out as well.

I was surprised to find after my car had been in for some work the stainless screws I'd previously put in this access panel had been replace with old kak they'd obviously found on the floor mad

I had my head inside a Jag XK8 wheelarch recently and they have a similar thing in there to get at the front indicators (or is it fogs, can't remember now)
Only theirs was clipped in with one of those clips you squeeze to release.
If I get chance to get my head under there again I'll take more notes.

Has anyone had a go at making something akin to the gear lever surround for the gap and with a 'lid' which has a rubber seal?
