Skoda Superb, a few kicking around at that level now. Darn comfy things!
O/T Petrol 1.8T but with 71k miles for under £1,500 quid - lot of metal for the money! http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

Stay away from Skoda Superb/Passat.
From painful experience...they have an unbelievably stupid design fault whereby the "waterproof" seal around the pollen filter perishes and lets rainwater flow down into the passenger footwell where it collects. Similarly the rubber bungs under the battery block easily with leaves and basically turn the bulkhead into a bath, drowning the battery, brake servo, and even the ECU.
The water then collects at the lowest point of the car, where even more stupidly VAG decided to put the comfort/convenience ECU and all the crimped nodes for the interior electrics, causing all the electrics to corrode and the loss of interior lights, central locking, alarm and other electrical systems.
I speak from the bitter experience of having just spent most of my Christmas holiday draining 3 inches of water from the passenger footwell and having to resolder most of the electrical connections. Google "passat water ingress" before you go anywhere near one. 1998-2005 models affected and 2002-2008 (Superb).
It's a shame because the Superb is an excellent car otherwise and great on the motorway but I'd never go near one again.
Maybe an Avensis, late Vectra with decent spec, Honda Accord, a V6 Omega?

The diesel point is a good one.
I bought an 02 2.4 170 S80 se on da bay for £1,130. It does 35 mpg on a run, provided that I do not stray far above 70. Back when I had a V70 D5 it was always stuck at 38 MPG, although that was an average so probably more on the motorway.
Given the difference in fuel price, the saving is not that large.
