Our car insurance renewal came through (from the people with the red telephone) at £320 + 10% if you pay by instalments. I spoke to them and complained that new customers are getting instalments at no extra charge, but they wouldn't match that.

I did a new quote as a new customer, everything the same (but actually a slightly smaller excess) £245.92 including protected NCD (not sure that was included in the renewal price, doesn't mention it in the docs) and instalments at no extra charge.

Has anyone cancelled the renewal and rejoined with the same company? I'm less than sure how to go about it - is it as simple as buy new, ring/write and cancel old?

I think it is. Let them know you won't be renewing unless they match the internet quote. Otherwise, cancel anyway, wait one day, do the quote again, buy the policy. Bosh.

Sometimes let it lapse at midnight and ring them the next morning as a new customer and make the savings - crazy but it works.

Okay so car is at risk between midnight and mid-morning the next day on the driveway but hey.

Believe that many companies charge an administration fee if you cancel, so easier (and cheaper) to let it lapse/run out.

Yes I should clarify the terminology I used - don't cancel the existing policy, cancel the renewal (ie let the policy expire). Then you get your NCD and are free to buy a new policy.

I've done this a few times.

Make sure there's no gotcha's in the policy - even though it's with the same firm it might not be the same policy. Stuff like not covering driving other cars could really catch you out.

Sadly there was a car change in the middle of the renewal, and so it has renewed but while on the phone they kept saying I had 14 days once the docs arrived to check/cancel if the policy didn't meet my needs. I think i'll give them a call tomorrow and invoke this cooling off period, then just go online and repurchase it at the lower price.

You should also check at privilege.

we always do an online quote as a new customer and if that is cheaper buy the policy there and then to start when the current expires.

They then ask for proof of NCD(and tracker) and we give them the old policy number .. done and dusted smile

Never been a problem

Andy, I did a couple of searches and got quotes mid £400+ but I will give Privilege a try, tbh i'd forgotten they existed as I hadn't heard of them lately.

I've just done it with Saga, I was swapping cars with 8 days left on the policy, had already been on their site and obtained a quote as a new customer for the new car. The person at their call centre then told me what the new renewal premiun would be ( this was £88 higher than the quote I'd received as a potential new customer), I then said I'd take out a new policy they said ' fine', so I've saved my £88.

My next door neighbour had house & contents insurance with SAGA and thought the renewal was a bit steep at £800. We pay £200 with LV. He called SAGA and they knocked £300 off straight off which seemed to annoy him even more.

After checking the renewal quote and then the new docs, it seems they'd removed the NCD protection as well.... Rang them, remonstrated then cancelled and have now purchased a new policy with them for around £160 less (they wanted another £58ish for NCD protection on the original policy!)

Yes I have done this and better off for £80. When I spoke to them about the renewal they offered to knock £3 off if they removed windscreen cover.
