Cooks knives? I've got wusthofs, they're brilliant. Some swear by globals - I find them too light and don't get on with the handles.
Knives are quite personal so I'd recommend trying a few first to see which feel more natural.
We don't have too many places local to us other than a trip to John Lewis, so trying them out could be a little tricky.Knives are quite personal so I'd recommend trying a few first to see which feel more natural.
From a quick look, I'd obviously underestimated how much you can pay for a set of knives - I think Global and Wusthoff are out

OK well, I'm no Michel Roux but let's assume you were buying for a new kitchen. What would you get for normal daily use?
Sorry but I really don't have a clue when I go to a site like Harts and I'm just faced with a zillion brands and models so any nannying would be greatly appreciated (and if it's on sale or heavily discounted all the better)

Depends on budget. Personally I love my Global knives but a good chef's knife is going to be £100+
Well as much as nobody on PH like to admit to being cheap, the current set is probably 10 years old and cost about £10 from Argos, so anything is a jump from there. If I were to say £100 max, keeping in mind it's just for regular daily use rather than "hobby/enthusiast" use, I'd like to think I could get something decent enough.
Anything wrong with these? http://www.hartsofstur.com/acatalog/Stellar_HT_Kni...

Personally I wouldn't bother with a set anyway. For most jobs a paring knife and a chefs knife will suffice.
Yep, 2 decent knives will do you much better than a mediocre set of 5. I have a set of 5 Globals but the one I use most often is the 'vegetable knife'.
I'd say try a few different types for one you like the feel of, then buy one good one, and invest in an idiot-proof sharpener (such as a wheeled ceramic) to keep it sharp.
Buying knives online is a bit like buying shoes online - there is no substitute for trying them on.
Ive just bought my first Global - a G48 Santoku from Richmond Cook shop
Fantastic service and brilliant pricing.
I dont think I will use another knife again, this is brilliant and does all I need.
Would agree with others - dont waste money on a set, just get one or two.

Great prices. The G20 flexible is also an awesome knife, I would try to stretch to one of those along with a G2. Fantastic service and brilliant pricing.

You'll also need a good sharpener (such as the Minosharp ones from that site).
I have a Global G2 and I use itfor absolutely everything, and have done for about five years now. Have never thought "I wish I had a another knife for cutting xxxx" (except for bread, but any five pound bread knife will do that). Get a Minosharp sharpener and should cost you about 120 all in.
Can also recommend Richmond Cookshop.

As people have said above 2 decent knives are better than 5 average ones
From the richmond website you could get a Global G2 chefs knife and a GSF15 small utility knife (which is useful for peeling and delicate butchery tasks) for £97 all in.
I have both of these and they cope with about 95% of tasks (That didnt stop me getting 6 more though
