I'm currently looking to change our Audi A2 hatchback for a 4 door saloon - Meaning that we will no longer be able to carry the dog in the boot.

I've done a little research and found you can get dog harnesses to hold the dog in a seatbelt:

But has anyone experience of what these are like to use?

Our dog goes in the car probably once a month at most when we take him for a walk somewhere different or to the vet. However, I cant rule out wanting to take him further, maybe on a motorway, in the future.

The harness seems a much safer option than the "back seat slings" which are also available:

We have a harness for our lab. She even knows how to put on now.
I use a carabiner to attach it to the seat belt over the supplied clip though.

It's good. She doesn't mind it at all.

Yep - I use them all the time. They work really well, but muddy paws aren't so good for car interiors though and if you have leather trim, dogs can't grip very well if you get a bit enthusiastic: This can have all sorts of side-effects, ranging from scratched leather, sickness, fear of travelling, etc.

We use "sling" + blankets + short belt that clips from harness to seat belt socket.

No problems, but you obviously shouldn't use it with just a collar.

The advantage over the sling you've shown is that in an accident the dog isn't going to go out through the windscreen at whatever speed you were doing before the impact (probably taking your head off on the way past). Even a small dog at 30mph isn't going to be good for them or you and at 60...

I think Aldi had them in a an offer few weeks ago.

the best i find are the harnesses that clip into the seat belt holder like pictured, however try and find one where the clip leash section clips away from the harness so you can just pop a lead on in its place to walk the dog etc. if the car leash section dosent come away it can be frustrating having to swap harnesses around for a quick walk (such as popping out at the services on a long car journey etc)

Use one half the time for my dog she is happy to wear the harness I think it was from Tesco (this one http://direct.tesco.com/product/images/?R=206-4351

it is really easy to get on and off. I do suggest covering the back seats with something that 1 the dog won't slip on and 2 that wont slip on the seat!
the extended strap on that one means she can get up turn around or lie down however she likes but the furthest forward she can get is to get her head on the centre arm rest, which gets covered in dribble.

Mine prefers being on the back seat with it on to being in the boot with a dog guard up and a bed to lie in.

and in her comfortable sleeping position

she was only 5 moths old then. Still using the same harness as it is adjustable for size and she has not broke it yet so good value for money too she is now about 20 months old

When I had my saloon, I had seat covers (the hammock type) and these had holes in them to get to the buckles. Our 2 dogs then each wore a harness to which we hooked on a strap which belted into the buckle. Seats stayed clean, dogs could move about a small amount, but not reach the front or fly forward. Never had a problem with either of our dogs when wearing harnesses. After changing to an estate, they are now in a cage in the boot.

Yep - all my dogs have been in the Porsche: Whizz and Dash go in it fairly regularly, as does my girlfriends 35kg Labradoodle smile Isn't that why the back seats fold down? wink

I actually had no choice once, but to leave Whizz in the turbo for about 4 hours, while I attended a business meeting... There was not a mark that wouldn't brush out when I got back! She was only about 5 months old at the time... good dog!

Very good. Summer is not a fan of being left in the car. She won't do any harm it just upsets her. Last time I had her on the back seat of my car (the boot was full) I had to hoover, brush, wipe down and polish the seats and clean the windows. Though taking her to the beach and for runs down muddy tracks was never going to end well. She likes to make a mess.
