Been away 18 months what's happened to the prices?
Discussion
Hi,
As per title, due to challenging business conditions combining with the birth of my baby girl I've been away frm the fold for the last 18months.
Came back to the fold this month and am quietly looking for something 17-25k, 911 as want to take the bambino out on more sedate Sunday jaunts now.
What's surprised me is the massive fluctuation in pricing at this level, for example - 2 near identicle c4s's colour, spec, mileage (80k), condition
(claimed) one at circa 16.5k one at circa 24k nearly 50% difference. This scenario seems to be commonplace. Factor in the 996/997 crossover and I'm left wondering where a) true Market points are and b) what's a safer bet on depreciation for 18months time.
So, calling on the collective expertise on here, key thing to achieve is 911 ownership for a year or two as I save for a longer term keeper, would you go for a) low end 997 c24-25k, b) 18-20k 996 c4s or c) 15-17k low mileage 996 c2. Obviously buying best condition possible, I know I should also consider a 993 but at current prices am just not sure they are the safe bet they have been in last couple of years.
Cheers

I was in a similar position a few months ago. Was set on a 996 C4S - mint low mileage examples were still at £25k or more back in October. To cut a long story short, decided they were too close to early 997 prices for my liking and eventually opted for a mint 996 C2 at £18.5K saving about £7K on my budget. Top money for a 996 C2, but it is mint and still stonking value compared to an equivalent C4S or 997. No regrets so far and don't think I'm missing out on anything over a C4S from a driver's perspective. A 997 would have been a different proposition for sure (not necessarily better, just different), but will probably visit that one in a few years time when they're at the price I paid for this car.
You should be able to get a mint 996 C2 comfortably for £17K I would have thought. Budget £4-5K more for an equivalent C4S and perhaps £7-8K more for a 997. Actual prices are all over the place and so is the condition of these cars, which are starting to get on a bit now.

Hey JC, good to hear from you mate, is nice to be back looking for wheels again, it's taken some self control selling up last year to invest in new vans and other comitments for the company but am now looking forward to getting a toy.
Hope you've got your flame suit on, nothing like bamming up the 996 massive in one easy sentence.
Hi MTR, keeper would ideally be a black 997 turbo on black turbo alloys, if I'm lucky enough to be able to save for one in a year or two, failing that a nice 997 c4s, as long as either are mint and paid for I'll be delighted to keep for a good while.
Thanks for the feedback.
Ps Good point on what's selling quickly, hopefully will get a handle on true Market values pretty quickly.

Dear Mr Floppy.........
You know JC is just jealous!!!
Depreciation says a 993 all the way.....but could be bills to sort one out at 25k.
Ask the aforementioned about the cost of air cooled nirvana!!
If you want a market idea look at RSJ they only sell 7C2S 6turbo and 6C4S and as Uktm says a top 4S is still strong money.
There are cheaper cars but as you will still be time poor I suspect you want to buy a decent car that you drive rather than maintain and do not have the time for a country wide search so better at one of the good retailers - like RSJ.
Personally as you have had a 4S I would try a 7C2S or maybe find a M3 CSL???
Whatever you get its gotta be better than a yell oddie!

OK, I am going to say go for a 996 Turbo for about 25k but buy carefully.Alternatively, a nice 993 Carrera.
