Wondered if they were any good as a quick in and out in between service?
Could also see what they're actually doing on my car as opposed to any other garage.

The only way I would contemplate that is if I personally knew and trusted the person who would be working on the car.

I've a lot of friends that are very skilled, trained, experienced, and trustworthy mechanics.

Not one of them has ever worked for Kwik Fit.

I'd trust myself to do a better job.

I sort of knew I'd get the responses I've got so far, but surely they've got to be decent? Or are they really that bad?

Which car is it? Why not give it a go yourself if it's only a basic service, or try a local specialist for your manufacturer.

^ exactly. You should be able to do an oil/oil filter/air filter change yourself on anything that's not renowned as an utter pig. (I do acknowlege that some cars are beasts to work on, but /most/ recentish stuff should be ok.)

They are really that bad. A colleague of mine was conned by them a few months ago, car taken in for a service and she was told the car was 'un-drivable', with £500 of suspension work being required before it was 'safe' to drive again. The car then failed it's MOT last week, with the suspension arms which had supposedly been replaced causing the fail. It turns out Kwik Fit had completed a different, much cheaper repair than what had been paid for, which was spotted by the garage carrying out the MOT. Trading standards are sorting it out at the moment, they also say they hear of so many Kwik Fit complaints it's unbelievable they're still in business.

Could anyone recommend any other national chain to do a better job?

The manufacturer would do a better job.

Alternativly, use a marque specalist. Plenty about. There's several WIKIs on PH which list specialists by marque by region.

Why do you want a non-manufacturer national chain?

Why does it have to be a national chain?

One of the significant benefits of opting out of my leased company car was that it meant I would never have to go to KwikFit again.

On one of the Merc forums, there's an owner who took his car in for one of those £25 oil changes (that's cheaper than most people can get fully synth oil for).

KF sucked the oil out - using the ATF tube! They realised, but didn't tell him and didn't refill it. First the owner knew was the car lost drive.

Thankfully the local KF area manager had worked at an MB dealer in the past so realised what had happened and how serious it was. It was all sorted but the owner is still left wondering if the autobox has suffered any damage.

judging by his previous posts its a 2003 Hyundai Coupe. So, any recommendations?

Personally I'd just go and ask a couple of back-street dealers near where you live. Just walk in and speak to them - ask them how much for a service and have a little chat. If they sounds like wkers don't use, and use one you feel comfortable with.

ps how's the claim against the poor Halfords radio install experience going? wink

As above, why does it have to be a national chain?

I used a new Kwik Fit that had opened locally, purely because I had a TVR and they were the only place stocking Mobil at the time. Popped down and low and behold, the manager was an ex TVR Mechanic!! Sourced the filter from another specialist and filled it with approx 7 litres of oil for £40 (well actually £20 as it was a new store opening). Couldn't have asked for more.

Oh and they used to do free top ups ! I think there was a limit, but great on an old V8!

Some branches have a very poor reputation, others I would say are fine. Apply a bit of common sense/judgement and off you go smile

I've had to use them before as it is a company car.

Terrible service. Would never use them if I could avoid it.

Beware Kwik-Fit. Went there as had an urgent need for replacement brake pads (on way out with family in car and heard nasty grind of pad on disc when pulling up at lights). Kwik-Fit (less than 200yds drive away) lifted the car off ground, took wheels off and worn pads out, then told me that I needed new discs as the others were badly scored - absolute crap! When I told them to just do pads they said that they couldn't as it was company policy to only do the complete job as they diagnosed because it was unsafe to let the car out any other way. I said bks, just put the worn pads back in and i'll drive it home and do it myself. This they did. Seems they were happy for me to drive a really unsafe car but not the safe one it could have been had they changed the pads. New pads from Halfords and 30 mins back home sorted the problem. It also sailed through two further MOT's before I sold it and supposed worn discs were never mentioned!!

popped into local KF as lost break pressure. Needed a hose replacing (around £50), but shock-horror, my pads and discs were 'near lethal'. Didn't have time to take it anywhere else as had to get going immediately, so ended up paying the thick end of £300. At least they offered to lube the handbrake free of charge. A week later and, you guessed it, the handbrake has given up the ghost. dishonest and incompetent. rats
