First Car / Insurance

Hi looking for a little help from you guys.....I'm looking to buy my nephew his first car and will be looking for something relatively new with a budget of £ 5k for the car not including insurance...as he will be tasked with sorting that himself.

Any wise advice as to which car would be the best for him insurance wise as dont want to lumber him with a car that will cost more than the purchase price to insure. Also any pointers as to manufacturer's offering free insurance on brand new cars would be greatly appreciated as stretching the budget is also an option.
