Inflation is a b***h. Everything appears to be becoming more expensive (even if that may not necessarily be the case in real terms). Remember when a new E-Type Jag was less than £4k?

All new cars are expensive, whats the point of this thread confused

Equivelant rivals are in a similar bracket, some are more expensive, some are less. You pays your money and takes ya choice. Sounds like a good car which has had positive reviews from those that have driven it.

What? HTF is a *Corsa* 1300kg!

Especially as the article makes out that it's a good thing that it's 'just' 1300Kg. Jesus wept what has happened to even small cars now, that's a fking tank not a small hot hatch.

Top of the range superminis seem to represent particularly bad value IMO, even in light of the "all new cars are expensive" truism

Got a shock recently when I looked at new Astras, a half decent spec 1.7CDTi SE is around £23k!!!

TBH, Vauxhalls seem to be expensive for what they are these days, compare them to VW for example and the equivelant VW is usually cheaper by a decent amount.

Agreed, so surely more shocking is Fiat trying to charge £37k for a 500 in the form of the Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari yikes

£22k is the deposit on a house not the price of a Corsa. You would have to be mad and blind to spend £22k on a Corsa. How much is one going to depreciate per year?

How much was the E-Type in comparison to the average terraced house, however?

The house or the Corsa? hehe

In percentage terms the Corsa, but in nominal terms i'd say you'll lose more on a house if you buy one tomorrow

Then again, look at it. Cars like the original Focus / 306 etc were around 1200-1300kg, to be honest the Corsa looks like a similar weight.

Lots more safety stuff, lots more gadgets, more soft-touch plastics for the reviewers to dribble over. It all adds up, and isn't particularly surprising.

Is there a car below the Corsa these days? That seems to be the way - models get bigger and bigger, so they introduce smaller models. So in reality, the modern VW Polo is actually the Lupo type thing...

So if i ask my local dealer how much they are, what will he say?

And surely they would sell more if they didn't advertise the fact that they are st value for money?

'Small' cars are not exactly small, anymore. It's not that the value for money had decreased; more the product has changed.

The Corsa is no longer a small, 800kg or so city car- it's the size and weight of an Astra a couple of generations back.

As smaller cars have grown, they're more or less squeezing larger ones out of existence.

I don't think £22k is good value in any case, but then I don't put a premium on wanting to drive a regular VXR, let alone one with some expensive mechanical additions.

For a brand new, base spec, 4 cylinder Corsa the want £12k!!

Probably £14k + for a decent spec and at least a 1.4 yikes

Honestly can't believe someone would even consider paying that.

List prices do seem to be going up a lot. Something similar seemed to happen from the late 80s to mid 90s. (i looked a lot at the prices on Triggers flickr old car reviews and noticed this) Then as 'rip off britain' became popularized cars seem to get cheaper, thanks to internet comparison and discount sites.

Look on any discount site and big discounts are available. I mentioned the insignia a couple of weeks back with a list of £18k, car supermarkets offering them for £12k.

Even desirable models like the BMW 520d with a list of nearly £31k can be had for £26k. When it first came out over a year ago, list was £28k, but the cheapest discounts were still £26k.

Given the Chinese now want a piece of the sales now, i cant see any big inflation in actual car prices TBH, even if the RRPs go up.

Agreed.

It's totally mad how much modern cars weigh.

My 1990 XR4x4 Sierra with a whacking great V6 fitted AND four wheel drive weighs in at 1280 kg IIRC.

My 1970 Volvo Amazon (which as regarded as a heavy car in classic car circles) weighs 1100 kg according to Mr Haynes.

Saying that, I'd rather have a crash in the Corsa though!
