looking to change from dslr to canon g12...

Evening all,
I'm looking at getting rid of my Sony A200 due to it taking up too much space and weighing too much, it tends to get used mainly on holidays and day trips and ive recently stopped using it as much and actually taking it out due to not being arsed to carry all my lenses and usual kit. So im looking at a Canon G12, anyone got one? or any other recommendations?

Good choice, look at the fuji X10 also, IMO a little bit better.

also consider the nikon V1 etc.

Maybe even a Canon S95 mate. Small enough to go in your pocket and a decent price now.

I have a G11. Very similar to the G12 (which added a few tweaks mainly to video and a couple of the controls iirc).

It's good, does a great job, excellent IQ and you can get a reasonably priced 3rd party (or Canon own but not so reasonably priced) adaptor that allows the use of sensible sized filters (58mm) and, in some ways, can assist the handling but at the cost of making it a little bulkier when the adapter is fitted.

It responds pretty quickly when turned on and for shooting - for its class. But it is not as responsive as a DSLR could be expected to be.

Whilst I would heartily recommend a G12 you may also want to look at the possibilities that a Micro 4/3 system (especially the recent models with improved AF) or Sony NEX system may suit your needs. Smaller interchangeable lenses and smaller bodies so a little like having a mini SLR in some ways. Plus you can get adapters that allow the use of many legacy lenses. Has to be worth considering even if only to feel comfortable with crossing them off the list.
