Not sure if this is the right section to post this topic, but sure it'll get appropriately moved if not.

Am considering taking up drifting as a hobbie, as I loved a taster course I was on.
Having never owned a rear wheel drive car before I guess that was to be expected.

I'd say I got on alright with the course, sure that could be contested. Main thing is I loved it.

So the question, and back on point.
What cheap and suitable car would you recommend to a novice drifter?

Have seen the 200sx/silvia seems to be quite popular, yet maybe not quite so cheap yet?

MX5. Get a 1.8, fit the skinny steel wheels from the boggo 1.6 and some of China's finest plastic tyres.

Or a Morris 1000

Any old Rear wheel drive car will do.
A limited slip diff would be good but not essential.
My old BMW 323 coupe was perfect. Good fun, cheap, sideways driving.

Definitely a BMW E36, they're cheap and take a beating. (Ideally the 2.5l) Plenty of cheap ones knocking around.

Or get an old mr2 turbo, you can drift like a real man then.

Get yourself over to www.driftworks.com.

Great forum over there, plus an extensive for sale/wanted forum with lots of pre-prepared drift cars.

I'd say an mr2 is a bad idea. I have one, the thing understeers like crazy, then snaps you, it's by no means a porsche and you can easily get out of nasty stuff as you dont have the power to get in over your head. I'd get a 200sx if youre serious, or an old bmw if your just looking to play. Mr2 is a quite tight, scary when wet mid engine car.

The 200sx may be a bit much to start with, both in terms of price and power. I'd go for a cheap MX5 and start from there. That said, the MX5 should be all the car you'll ever need as far as drifting goes, but they're so much better than just 'drift slagz'.

e36 325i with LSD is good. I think it's easier without a turbo if you're learning also

Old Volvos. The 340 (I think) can fit a good 1.8l Clio Engine in.

As mentioned any E36 with LSD or the MX5. I heard that Jap turbo drifters have lots of engine reliability problems - I heard it from a drifter bloke that bough my M3.

Anything with a limited slip diff and bad enough rear tyres. You can get worn rears for something stupid like £5 a pair at drift events, and they'll make a 1.6 MX5 drift like an AC Cobra on ice. smile

Caterfields also work well if you have a bit more budget and you want something you can use on the road too.

E36 with a 6 pot. Crap tyres on the back (linglongs or similar), get the diff welded if its not an LSD.

A friend of mine has just started this

e30 325 and a welded diff was the weapon of choice, although an E36 is probably a cheaper alternitive

Even as someone who's always seen it as a bit pointless I must admit it does look a bit of a laugh

I saw one a few weeks before Christmas that had a 2.0 16v Clio lump fitted
