S Type R - buyers guide
Discussion
I think the S-Type R only ever came with the later 4.2 engine, the earlier 4.0 supercharged engine was fitted to the XJR and XKR.
The 4.2 should be a more reliable engine than the 4.0. It doesn't suffer the issues of the timing chain tensioners failing or the plastic water pump impellers breaking.

The first edition STR had the 4.0 V8 engine. Avoid! No doubt about it, go for the second and later editions all with the 4.2 V8 for a whole load of reasons beyond 200cc.
R.
I agree, if you have the money for it.R.
That said the 4.2 is a heavier engine - I have a 4.0 and have changed the chains, tensioners, water pump, thermostat (all the weak points) for the latest 3rd gen metal ones. Then upgraded the supercharger pulley to gain over 400hp. So in esence I have a strong 4.0SC. What i'm trying to say, is that if your budget is restricted, you can still get a strong reliable 4.0 and it will be cheaper than a younger 4.2
It begs the question
low mileage and tidy 4.0 or high miler 4.2 ?
Hmmm, some mis-information from the last 2 posters....
The original S-type 99-02ish came with 3.0 V6 and 4.0 V8 NA engines (no supercharged version) and a nasty 5spd Ford auto transmission.
At around the same time as the first alu XJ intro (02-03), the S-type was heavily upgraded with the same new powertrains as the XJ and with a much improved interior. It was only at this point that the S-type R was introduced, with the 400hp 4.2 supercharged V8 and the new 6speed ZF auto box.
There was no 4.0 STR.
The 4.2 engine is a stroked version of the earlier 4.0 with many other mechanical enhancements - a much more robust engine and no heavier than the earlier engine as implied by the previous poster.

Is the 6 speed ZF box reliable?

Thanks
Is the 6 speed ZF box reliable?
Generally, yes. Well worth changing it's oil and filter(s) every 40k or so. Jaguars take on 'sealed for life' and that they never need an oil change, is a crock of shyte. Is the 6 speed ZF box reliable?
They can be re-mapped too.

I've had an S type R for about 4 years so here goes
There was a major chassis revision in 2004/5 so it's worth getting the later model which is much better than the earlier one. Our has done 95K and other than a tendancy to eat brake discs and a blown hose it's been fine. Very quick car, excellent roadholding and a great foil for my Sagaris. It's blindingly quick on kickdown and the gearchange is so smooth it's hard to tell which gear it's in
Fuel consumption is around 22mpg around town but can be got up to about 26mpg on motorway runs
Mine might even be for sale in a couple of months....
