Just checked my account and they have increased the monthly fee by almost 10% WTF!

Apparently i got sent a letter informing me back in november last year. More than twice the rate of inflation. Do they think their running a railway!

What % has yours increased by? (im an off peak member)

Sounds a bit harsh, ours is +4% - full member, gym and pool etc but dont have vantage or tennis.
Dont recall being informed of this, just noticed the DD amount had gone up.

I was told at the gym today that differing membership levels went up at different rates. Cheapest membership hit hardest it seems!

I used to belong to one of their gyms (Wycombe). Off peak was around £60, I guess it is more now, they always hiked the fees by more than inflation. it is a lovely gym, but since I travel a lot I wasn't using it enough. Yesterday I joined my local Fitness First for £14.95 a month off-peak. Even if it isn't as glamorous, and has no pool I can't see why there is such a huge gulf in prices.

Just need to shake off my jet lag and get down to the gym now...

Apparently gyms aren't seen as a luxury anymore. You might as well suggest people give up their iPhones.

We are members of DL and they are the only place locally that has kids' stuff. Consequently they take the mickey on service and price because they know we have little choice.

Mine's reduced by 65%. However, I suspect that the £250,000 renovation and new ownership will fk up what was a nice little gym!

DL - High Wycombe has just gone up to £84.50 a month (peak) from £80 last year.
Its a lovely gym but bloody expensive, especially if you don't use the pool / tennis facilities.

I pay as it really is the only nice option around... and I get my monies worth as I do gym 3-4 times a week.
If you've joined Fitness First in the East Wycombe retail park ...good luck ! You get a lovely smell of the Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet that it is built upon which is just what you want when you're training hehe !

Yep, that's the one I just joined. I was a member of the Odyssey gym before it was bought by David Lloyd, been going for years. I was a frequent hot-tub user :-)

I'm now travelling 2 weeks a month, sometime away at our second home for a month too, which makes the off-peak cost of £60+ unjustifiable. I did notice the waftage from KFC at Fitness First. For £15 a month I'll put up with it. It is also half the distance from my house (Hazlemere).

btw, there is another Cerbera owner who uses DL, and a PHer with a Chimaera who lives in the new flats opposite.

I've chatted with the Chimera owner on PH before! Haven't seen another Cerbera owner down there before though!

Never increased once in 3 years. Despite it being £52 for a new joint membership, I still pay £42 a month for a joint membership.

I got an email last week from my old gym with their 'bargain' new fee of £64 a month single, and that I should be quick as spaces are limited. Politely requested that I be taking off their list...

£42 per month is awesome! I do like David Lloyd gyms but even though I can afford it, I can't stomach paying 3 times as much as my local gym.

That seems to be pretty normal for David Lloyds rolleyes Not sure where you are but the Milton Keynes gym is rubbish for the money. I pay almost £200 for a family of four (without rackets) but this is ironically good value given the wife and I go 4-5 days a week and the kids 2-3.

It's a shame DW don't cater for kids as they only charge about £30 for a peak membership. A mate uses Pure Gym, which is only £16/month with no contract. I thought it would be a ste hole but it's actually very good.

Aren't DL trying to invoke classism by keeping the fees high, thus keeping the plebs away?

There seems to be no other reason for it.

The equipment is no better than anywhere else.

They are just as crowded as other gyms.

The space is no better. The Food is no different (and at least where I am, not even fitness/diet focussed).

You're there to be fleeced it seems, out of principle

There's a reason why I only Personal Trained at DL for a short while - they don't even offer level 3 PT. It's level 2 Gym Instruction at best. They don't to even basic health assessment stuff like checking RHR or BP! They don't offer dietry advice, which as many accept, is at least 50% of the self-development equation. The PT/gym insurance seems... sketchy. Cowboys dare I... prove! And I hate cowboys no matter the field!

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Money corrupts... etc.

Its actually kind of clever - every organization that sells something has a "target market".
DL's, as you say, wants to appeal to high earners who will want some sort of exclusivity that can only be achieved by putting membership out of the reach of others. You can't fault DL for providing a "product" that people will pay good money for. .... if they don't do this, someone else will!

(Not sure I agree about the equipment though - DL, in my experience have much better kit than others gyms I've been members of).

And then they go and let the local footie team junior squad as well as other assorted yoofs use the facilities as part of "community bonding" or somesuch.

Had a few problems with this a year or so ago, and a few people got peed off about it. It seems to happen less now.

Yes, they certainly are - the demographic of the Fitness First gym I now visit is very different from DL. If I were around all the time and able to visit more consistently I would stay with DL. Much nicer place, pool, very clean, all functioning equipment, plenty of MILFs to ogle. FF is a bit 'rougher around the edges', but for £15 a month it does what I need for now (but I certainly won't be walking around the showers without my flipflops on!).

Yeah I agree, kids can be a bit of a handful. In my DL's though they seem to want it all ways round. Mine pay almost the same price as an adult but aren't allowed to use the same level of facilities. They also provide them with inadequate after gym facilities i.e. play/dining areas but the kids make up around 80% of all food sold in the place
