Test drove the Elise 111R recently. Pretty cool, but at revs below where the clever valve thing happnes, it felt less torquey than my standard S1. Anyone else tried it and felt the same way?

Not driven a 111R, yet, but have driven several Toyotas powered by the same engine, and it feels pretty characterless in all of them.

Not sure how much of it is the refinement of modern engines, thought - a Ford Crossflow on lumpy cams and big Webers feels much fiercer than most VVC and ECU driven stuff, but I'm sure that the performance is actually much worse.

yup agreed - VHPD 190bhp K series are much the same - I think they are technically near enough the same power delivery as a std car before 6K revs...but because they liven up so much after they FEEL much faster over 6K and slower below.

I am with Bogie on this. Due to the car being so much quicker above 6000 rpm it feels slow below. However, if you actually look at the in gear times for both the 111r and Exige in 3rd gear from 20-40 20-50 ... 70-90 they are all around 3.4 or 3.5 sec which is actually awesome.

Yup - same with the Honda engine cars. My car (supercharged) is quicker still...but dosent feel it sometimes as the power delivery is so smooth and linear its very deceiving...until you look in your rear view mirror and everything has disappeared !
