One of the big TVR dreams for me is to take the Chimaera round the Nurburgring...

Has anyone done this recently and is it just a case of rocking up and paying the "toll"?

Any tips on where to stay and rough costs would be good too!

Thanks!

Did it in 2009, several ways of doing it but I would at least get a bit of advice on the circuit before driving it. We were lucky as the owner of the hotel we stayed at is an instructor on the 'ring and has a video for you to watch and gives a bit of advice on do's and dont's. The hotel is The Burgstube in Nurburg although many stay in Adenau which is a bit more lively at night and has more bars, restaurants etc. We called at a race meeting at Spa on the way to make it a bit more interesting but to be honest the roads around the 'ring are almost as much fun as the 'ring itself.

To be honest I can't remember how much the fuel cost was. It obviously depends which route you are taking and where you are in the country. We are from south yorks and it worked out only slightly more expensive to take the hull-rotterdam ferry and have less driving to do than to drive to dover and then have more driving in europe. From what I remember the 'chim averaged about 25 - 28 mpg and incidentally was the only vehicle not to suffer any issues. It's a must do trip tho'. I dont know if this is any help, but i am under the impression that some insurers ringfence quite a large area adround the "ring" so you wouldnt be insured in or around.
i am sure somebody else will know more than me

Good point..

My insurance covers me for track-day use but not the Ring..

I'll add that to the list...

Just don't bother if its raining / wet.

It rained for the whole time we were there, so we went on anyway - I wouldn't recommend it!

I did it in the Chim in 2010,when I had insurance via allianz, been loads other times in other vehicles. You will have straight line speed but cornering you will be slower than others unless you're brave.Forget it if its wet its a nightmare, also remember the wealth of safety equipment the tiv has when giving it some

Prompted by this thread, I did a bit of Googling and found a useful page:

http://nurburgring.org.uk/beginners.php

Also, on the same site:

Makes interesting reading. Still fancy doing it one day though!

Did the ring in my chimaera in september, had never driven there before so did a track day with RSR. Dovetailed the trip in with a weekend of racing at spa too. Its great fun, rigged up a video camera..my passenger was navigating and it really was a great experience! The biggest advice i could give is take it easy, run off is minimal to none! There will be cars overtaking you at amazing speed, on the approach, through the apex and as you exit corners and even if, like me, you're doing 150mph on the straight bits you will be overtaken by cars going a lot faster, beware! Fuel costs were approx £300 for the weekend, hotel was 140 euros for 2 nights for 2 people. Other than cooking my brake fluid the car performed well..until the final lap when the oil pressure reduced dramatically..drove home with under 15psi of pressure, shes got a lovely tappet noise now, a rebuild is due.
Go for it, enjoy it..

Ring itself is just a question of arriving, paying and driving... Last time I went, which was 15 December, I had the place to myself (guess slightly snowing didn't help much in terms of people showing up, and the fact that it was a Tuesday...) Great fun though, even if a lap took me around 13 minutes (RRS 2.7 TDV6, and two road works parts on track).

NIce place to stay, if you want to keep it "motorsport" related is the Motorsport hotel (I can look the exact address up if you want). Some nice restaurants close to it as well.

If you're up for a trip (not necessarily in June), do give a shout... I'd love to come along (maybe in the TVR, maybe in another toy...)

... Having first checked that it's a public session at the time you arrive, of course! wink
