Would a Haynes Range Rover manual be any help?

The Granada and Sierra ones cover the little V6 in my S3 very well.

Thought about haynes for the rover v8 efi, but not sure how diferent things like torque settings etc are for the 5.0l. any one know if that manual would do the job?. Anyone done head/rebuild for a 5.0L using these manuals?

Hi Dean,

I stand to be corrected by those that know better than I but the RV8 in my experience is pretty resilient to being boiled alive.

I have had one go in a RR stuck in nowhere in France in the midle of night with no phone. Must have driven it for over 5 miles with very little/ no water until it conked out just as I reached habitation. Replaced the water pump seal chucked some water in it and was fine for another 30k miles.

Have also over heated due to fans in the middle of summer in the Chimaera and again no long term damage.

I'd chuck (edited to add 'following correct procedure for bleading system') some water in it and run it up if I were you before ripping it to bits. Hopefuly you got lucky.

I used a combination of the bible and a Land Rover Haynes manual (together with stuff off here and RV8 specialist web sites) when I did head gasket and cam on mine. All pretty straight forward except for getting the manifolds off. Plenty searchable on here covering that!

If you are going to tear it to bits anyway it would be worth looking at cam replacement depending upon mileage on current cam. Mine was well worn after 60k.

I cant remember how much on this is covered in the Steve Heath bible alone, I will check if I can find it tomorrow night.

A handy book to have but doesn't go beyond service work / fault finding etc.

Thanks for the advice so far.

i have steve heaths bible. I should have read it cover to cover and my problem wouldnt have happend, as he clearly states in there that TVR have put under rated fuses in for the fans and the power surge of them coming on, commonly blows them resulting in over heating the engine. I had mine warming up in the garage, next thing i know there is hot water spraying everywhere... ya gotta love um. Anyway his book is good but its not a workshop manual.

I am quite sure the head gasket has blown as a minimum, its looks like a steam engine out of the exhausts and the expansion tank is bubbling. I need to do some compression tests before i start and then going ofrward taking it all apart is the easy bit. I just know with out the books i will put it all back together and just as i am about to start it, my missis will come into my garage saying things like " whats this for, i found it yesterday on the floor and thought you might need it"

why do they do that?

Anyway keep coming with the advice please, every little helps, as a certain supermarket says

For engine and ignition I have the Land Rover Disoovery Haynes Manual 89-98 like this one http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-Rover-Discovery-Hay...

I know there are differences with the TVR V8 but it will help.

I also have the RVR8 manual, which Dennis will send you on disk for a fiver. Highly recomended as the pictures are high resolution colour. and he takes Paypal.

Yes and no. The engines with the old tin gaskets and old stock bolts can blow a head gasket pretty easily. It is surprising how many are driving around with a bad gasket..with or without noticing the symtoms. However, the engines fitted with the later bolts and composite gaskets are exactly as you say...as resilient as the earlier ones are not. But that being said a head gasket job is not difficult and gutting the compression on an engine with "tin gasket" heads (by using the thicker composite) is not worth it for a sports car. [Doing the reverse is more logical.)

It is vital to verify that anything was blown at all. Compression tests (dry and wet) are in order. That will turn up a gasket problem and also give an excellent idea of how well the engine is aging. It only takes 1/2 hour.

As to instructions on replacing the gasket, that is not an issue. The help on this forum is better than any manual and there are enough images and diagrams about to show anyone anything.

+8

Although it wouldn't necessarily account for expansion tank bubbling, the 5L heads are more prone to leaking through/into the exhaust ports, and this can give you the 'steam engine' effect in more serious cases.
It can also result in nothing more than an exhaust port that looks like that cylinder is running very lean (while plug colour is fine), and a need to top up the coolant occasionally.

It is probably worth checking while stripped down.

For engine stuff the Discovery 94-98 model is the documentation you want, just ignore the rod length, stroke, piston heights, valve sizes... bearings, assembly should be the same apart from a few TVR anomolies, composite head gaskets, valley gasket tin/comp, valve stem seals umbrella/pressed..

It would be easier to post more relevant tips if you declared somewhere what age your car is, they changed a fair bit over the production run.

ETA: you will probably find it easier to source rebuild parts from Rob (v8racing on here) or TVR Power as they will know better what gaskets & bits your particular model will need.
