I have decided to step off the diesel train and I'm currently looking at getting something a little bit more exciting. Currently favourites are the bmw 130i,older shape r32 and possibly and maybe e46m3.

Bmw130i starts at 6.5k and something decent can go up to £9,000

R32's are nearly in the same price bracket but slightly cheaper with the newer shape coming in at around 10-12k for a decent one

TBH the M3 doesnt do anything for me so that has been dropped. I guess I want an everyday car and in my opinion I dont think it is.

Then we have the RX8 , what is not to like , they start at 2.5k for a 2003 231bhp car, with near on perfect driving dynamics and four seats. Ok it will probably need a rebuild at that price but surely they cant all be fked. My current favourite is a 231 2005 with 30k miles on, for just £3995.

I know about warm starts and the oil issues, most journeys will be under a mile maybe less sometimes, am I asking for trouble with an cheap RX8 ?

Tbh, I dont think I want to spend more than 5k on a car, after loosing considerate amounts in the past I finally had enough

What's not to like?

Sub 20mpg, £500 a year road tax (on the later cars) and a thirst for oil.

They're cheap to buy because they're expensive to run.

Another vote for the 130i.

The R32s look good and sound good but are very disappointing dynamically in my opinion and experience. The Mk5 I owned was cumbersome and very thirsty.

The 1 series chassis, on the other hand, is a peach and 3.0 straight six is a lovely motor.

And for the reasons above, I wouldn't touch a cheap RX8.

Hold on, you want exciting and then mention an R32 and dismiss an M3 ?

You agree decent 1 series are over £6.5k then say you don't want to spend more than £5k.

I think you need to sit down and decide what you actually want.

And I doubt the real answer is an RX8.

You don't think an M3 is an everyday car, yet will consider a leggy RX8?

Its all down to perceived value, is the 130i twice as good compared to an rx8 ? I do around 20k year

20k a year?

A £5k RX8 will mean 10% of the purchase price a month, every month, in fuel alone.

I had an RX-8 and in my opinion it was a terrible car. Thirsty, so-so performance and the rotary engine is a ticking time bomb. They're dirt cheap for a reason.

Also as it happens, I had an R32 around 4 years ago. It was probably my favourite car, but that may be down to the fact that I was a 20 year old hooning around in a 3.2 V6 driving

It made a fantastic noise, but wasn't the last word in the ride/handling stakes. I bloody loved mine, but the image has gone downhill a bit in recent years. The MK4 R32s are cars with real character.

image has defiantly gone downhill now there in barry price range

the R32 has simply amazing composure over rough roads, far faster point to point than either of my scobby sti ppp's, and of course there is no wet with the R32, and i laughed like crazy at all the stuck bimmers and mercs i went past in all the heavy snow

stunning noise, very cheap to maintain, front discs and pads are less than £400 from a main dealer which is a bargain by VAG rates and for there size.

but i avgd 18mpg over the 50k miles i put on mine frown

I had seriously considered getting a rx-8 before finally settling on a e46 coupe, having joing the rx owners club and looking through the Internet, and actually speaking to owners,I decided a rex wasn't for me I was looking at 55 plates on the autotrader they are going for 3-3.5k but £500 road tax very heavy insurance quotes serious maintance expense and the fact there is alot of reliability issues on the car it scared me off

Exactly what I thought. Ive been through all the hassle an RX8 can throw up when we got my Dad one. Great cars but flawed with so many problems, Oil usage is NOT one of them, but its what the bloke down the pub says. Think starting problems, warning lights, coil packs etc
I have an M3 for an everyday car.....and love itdriving
