One of THE guitar greats is SRV. I have a video of him playing the same joint in Austin filmed five years apart. In the first bit, you can see he is really quite ill (drug usage was his demon of choice at the time) and is thin, pale, and tensed like a coiled spring. During "Texas Flood" he really looks like he's trying to strangle his Strat, and not once during the whole song does he open his eyes. Visceral does not come close to describing that performance.

What always amazes me is that he played using .013 gauge strings

My fingertips bleed in sympathy every time I hear him do a 2-step bend.

You can hear the gauge the most on "Little Wing" at the beginning I reckon. He's the only guitarist I've heard of who wore out necks. I once strung a strat with 13s, and I could barely get clean chords out of it.

He did use .13 strings, but he also tuned down. The strings were for the tone, not to prove how macho he could be.

I'd give my right nut to hear him finish this, he broke a string apparently and it was never aired on MTV. Can be difficult to find on youtube.

His voice here is outstanding!

Sorry, he really could play but I never really got the guy to me he just seemed to be trying too hard to be as good as his reviews particularly towards his rather untimely end. ( he murdered Little Wing )

So you rate SRV's brother over SRV? That really is an interesting viewpoint.

For me, Jimmy's playing is a facsimile of T-Bone Walker; a fine benchmark indeed. Yet some way behind Stevie who managed to weld together the styles of Albert King / Jimi Hendrix / Jimmy Page and make it all his own. Call it hot-rodded Delta Blues, if you will.

That's the great thing about music, though. It's a broad church and very subjective.
