Everyday Classic?
Discussion
Hello all. I currently have a BMW 120d which gets me into work on my 20min commute in a capable yet dull fashion.
However I have fallen out with this car, particularly as the throttle is as responsive as a deaf mute in an isolation cell. Yes, it returns 47mpg and I only fill it up once a month, but I’ve had it for 2 and a half years now and it’s very dull.
Luckily I am about to move house and my commute will become the mountain section of the TT course. I see this as a great opportunity for a more fun car as I’m sure you‘ll agree.
I’d like something that won’t lose any money via depreciation with a budget in the region of £10k to £12k (depending on what I get for the BMW and if I get a bonus this year). I’d like around 30mpg when dawdling along but something exciting when not. The car will almost exclusively be used for commuting as we drive the wife’s car at weekends with the kids in it. Current thinking is an every day classic.
Top of the list of options is an eighties 911, but not sure on buying such a high mileage car, also an E34 M5, possibly a 635 CSi, or an R107 SL (what my wife calls the ‘Hart to Hart’ car) but I wanted to throw it open to PH for any options I might have missed.
No LHD cars unfortunately as my wife will need to drive it occasionally and doesn’t do LHD. The car will be used every day in all weathers, circa 10,000 miles a year. I am predominantly looking at eighties cars as they seem better value than earlier ones and may be further towards the bottom of their price point. Added bonus of £20 RFL for pre ’85 cars here.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

What do you want from the classic? Purely fun to drive, or something comfortable fun too?
Doing 10k miles a year in any older car you're going to need to spend some time under the bonnet, or have a very good local garage!
I'm not a fan of the 80s motors, I'd go back to the 70s... to try and achieve 30mpg it'll need to be 4-cyl, so that rules out a Stag, so I'd suggest a Dolly Sprint.

968 a good shout.
Mainly looking at running costs really. If theres minimal or no depreciation adn it only costs £20 a year to tax then the fuelling cost differential is less of a sell to the Mrs!
Really though I fancy a change, I have lots of spanners so maintenance won't be an issue, and really want to have fun driving as much as possible as life's too short not to!

If your roads are free flowing and over heating isn't an issue... I can't help but not suggest this http://pistonheads.com/sales/3419954.htm
