Skoda Superb - Thoughts?
Discussion
Looking for a very comfortable slog-mobile for 100 mile a day commute on m-ways and a-roads (cruise control, possibly auto, diesel, big seats etc etc).
I honestly cannot think of a more practical, roomy or comfortable car for the money. It just seems incredible that what is, essentially, a cheap Phaeton can be had for this little - and this is one of the more expensive I've looked at!

t or something?! Can't get my head around how so much car can be bought for so little.

I'm interested in these as well and been reading up on them lately, seem a lot of car for the money. Although from what I've read the 1.9 TDI PD130 is the better more economical and reliable engine. Also they seem to suffer from a water ingress problem, see here:

But this can be fixed according to that link (hopefully before it kills the ECU).
Edit: Above applies to Mk1 only.

I'm a fan of the Superb, but it's a cheap stretched Passat, not a Phaeton. Might be better looking at the 1.9 4 pot rather than the 2.5 V6.
I always thought they were designed as an alternative to the Phaeton but never sold very well (as with the Phaeton!). Either way, both are good benchmarks! The 1.9 does have better economy and, sadly, that is the main thing that I'm after so it would be that model rather than the 2.5 - just happened to be the first one to hand when doing the linky!
big fan of the superb
had a mk 1 in comfort trim and the 1.9 PD130 engine. Gave me a proper 50mpg on the motorway slogs, drove like a collapsed sofa and was generally very comfortable to drive and cruise in. People also love to come for rides because of the rear leg room and the softly softly ride. Do not go for a spirited drive down a B road unless you are immune to sea sickness.
Solid car, would have another!
Mk2's are even better, better materials inside, very handsome looking car and the non-estate has a trick boot lid that can switch from saloon style opening to hatch style opening. TG mag even gave it their luxury car of the year award one year.
No way is it based on a pheaton. Its not wide enough and the pheaton had its own special factory to be built in. The mk1 shares most of its interior with the passat of the time and like others have said, based on a stretched version of the passat developed for the chinese.

Have a look for the limited run of Edition 100 version, looks very nice and slightly higher spec then the Elegance I think. The 1.9 does have better economy and, sadly, that is the main thing that I'm after so it would be that model rather than the 2.5 - just happened to be the first one to hand when doing the linky!
My old man runs an 08 plate 1.9tdi with around 45k miles on it, it really is superb.
Huge cabin front and back, decent sized boot, great 45mpg+ economy, DIY servicing a doddle (his has only needed oil, filter & tyres so far), cabin is creak free & durable, and in basic spec with steel wheels/trims and squishy high profile tyres, it soaks up the potholes with ease.
It is not however, fun to drive in any way, but as a wafter, cruiser, motorised sofa - it's stonking value.

The Passat and Phaeton are not just worlds apart, but possibly in total different solar systems. As for the Superb, the one you linked to is £5k for a 9 year old car.
Not a bad car, but personally I see nothing it offers beyond the usual Ford Mondeo / VW Passat alternatives, unless you need some extra rear leg room.
The local startion cab drivers down here like them, so they must be robust enough.

Personally i think the saloon is a very clumsy looking car - Jap car makes get sneered at for far less.
Super practical estate is gushed about - but rear seat is shaped for 2 only
Also it is only new car purchased by mini cab drivers.

been in a few that are/were taxi's round my way and I'm 6'6' and there's plenty of room in the back for me to stretch my legs....incredibly comfortable as well
Agreed - my only experience of one is in the back of Supurb Taxis and they have all been wonderfully comfortable. The auto (DSG?) ones seem even more smooth.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
