I believe that it is true. The kits are not expensive. Drink drive limits are lower in France than in the UK.
It is possible that the French police will target vehicles coming out of the ports and issue a fixed penalty fine if you do not have this. They did this when yellow vests became law - if they were not to hand in the vehicle passenger compartment (NOT in the boot) you got a fine.
There are other things that it are worth knowing. For instance if you have to wear spectacles to drive you have to have a spare pair in the car. You also need to carry your vehicle registration document as well, for instance.
And don't believe the people at the ports who say you have to have this or that.

Of course, don't even think about taking a radar speed detector if you want to see your TVR again!!!!
I am a little boring and try and comply with different country regulations so there is no hassle on holiday!!
I will work out a masking pattern for lights, but as I have Cibies it may not be useful for others.

Was very amusing watching people with faired in headlights, HID's etc trying to decide where to stick their little black triangles when I went to Le Mans a couple of years ago.

Up to you whether you bother though, we'll only be doing approx 100 miles in France during the whole trip on Thursday morning and most of that will be cruising at motorway speeds, which in France (when dry) is a nice 80mph anyway
