Just been sniffing around on ebay and spotted this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=18308&item=2483648287&rd=1

no reserve, and currently sitting at £14,500 (as I write).

Does having no reserve on ebay mean that you must sell to the highest bidder, or can you just withdraw the sale if the price doesn't go high enough? If so, then what's the point in a reserve?

Doesnt state the usual rubbish about having the car for sale elsewhere and reserving the right to withdraw, so if he did withdraw could be a case for e-bay

It has been for sale on eBay before. I suspect the guy now really needs the cash, why else would someone sell a car on eBay?

Is it just me or does the rear number plate look different?

Because that's quite often the place where you will get the best price.

On the later cars (don't know when it was introduced) the rear plate is angled in at the top, so that you can use a standard plate. So rather than being rear lit, they are top lit (like a normal car) - does that makes sense ?

It was, and it was up for £30k. Same time as I had my Tuscan up for sale.

If you have no reserve on ebay and the price doesn't get to what you want, couldn't you just get a friend to bid higher so they win the auction, and you don't bother then completing the sale?

you could do this but it is against eBay rules - it is known as shill bidding but is difficult to prove though

You could always cancel the auction at the last minute, although a lot of people do bid in the dying seconds so you may have ended up selling it at a decent price.

Ebay is a funny one when it comes to selling cars. The cost is actually quite low - around he £40 mark of the top of my head if it sells. Most people seem to put cars on setting their reserve at mid range auto trader type prices and they never get there. Cars with no reserve do tend to attract the bids - I have seen some go for relative bargains and then a few go for more than you could get a couple of examples from Autotrader buying privately. I think some people get into a bidding frenzy which is great if you are a seller.

My other half has a clothes shop and also sells stuff on Ebay and it is a very handy additional sales outlet. I have bought and sold the odd bit of stuff in the past and never had any problems.

I am selling my Alfa 156 on there this Friday and have no idea how it will go - it will be an experience.

It's a flat fee for selling cars.

Went for £30,101. Was considering an upgrade for a while but bottled out as it approached £30k

Any opinions on the final winning bid? Was it 'about right' a bargain? or....?

Well assuming it's as described. I think it was a bit of a bargain; a dealer would have probably had it priced up for about 40k.
