Air Cooled Turbo - Which do you prefer ?
Discussion
While doing my usual browse through the dealers I came across these two turbos for sale at Gmund.
One is a 930 the other a 964 3.3.
What caught my attention is that they are almost identical mileage and very close on price. They're even similar colours.
So - if you were in the market for a pre-993 turbo which would it be - and why ?

Personally I prefer the look and feel of the 964. Its the perfect mix between old school but with just enough modern tweaks (Power steering and Air con) to make it a doable daily driver.
I know a lot will say the air con is crap. Sure its not up to a modern day car but providing its been overhauled it still blows nice and cold.
I also prefer the looks of the 964 (reckon its unbeatable with speedlines and lower suspension)
Each to their own.

For me the 964T is perfect, it feels classic but modern with it, whereas a 930 feels classic but old with it.
I would say the 930 is slightly nicer looking though, especially compared to a standard 3.3 964 on cups and high front suspension. The 3.6 on speedlines is a different story though and just about as perfect as a 930. Fuchs wheels are iconic mind and the 930 is the poster car I grew up with. In fact I've still got the picture of it with a Countach and 328 Ferrari accompanying it.
The 964 screams classic Porsche but not ancient Porsche and can still be driven like a modern car, hence my favourite. All imho.

I've been lucky enough to own examples of both and they are very different cars. Both are epic. The 930 is no doubt more scary and harder work to drive but the flipside of this is that it is a huge rush when it all comes together on the right road. The 964 is considerably more civilised but still offers a big rush. The big point for me was that I drove my 964T every day but ended up driving the 930 much less often. Given the choice now I'd go back to the 964T because it would get much more use but I wouldn't have passed on the 930 ownership for anything.

Not having a dig at you mate, but your referring to the 930 right as you all told us your red one was around the £50k mark or are you meaning you thought they were still worth a lot more?Edited by turbo964 on Thursday 5th January 21:48

The 964 wins on a better heating ventilation system. Power assisted anti lock brakes. Power steering. But I prefer the purer more mechanical drive of the 930. You are just more involved with the whole 911 thing. If that means hard work, well yes that's why I love it. Looks wise the 930 just looks right. Even against a 964 3.6 on speedlines. They were never designed to carry 18" wheels with low profile tyres. Fuchs for me
