The main server is rank unavailable shite. Somebody should post a mail about having paid formal club membership to sustain the club infrastructure.....

It's not the "main server" (as in the Web/PHP server), but the database server.
There are a couple of reasons the problem we are seeing could be occurring.
Firstly, they may have had to restart the database server, and MySQL wasn't started as a daemon. In which case, they need to find out why it didn't restart properly, then restart. I *think* that if they started MySQL manually, it may not work - I think it has to be started as a daemon. It could look to the admin people that MySQL is working correctly, but not work from the forum.
Second possibility is that they have upgraded the MySQL version, and there is a conflict between the configuration files. In that case they need to edit the my.cnf file to point to the correct mysql.sock file (i.e. the one for the new version).
Finally, the MySQL server might have gone down, or be partially unavailable...it doesn't seem to be totally dead.

Whichever one it is, it should not take a long time to fix. The architecture of the site is very, very simple - a Linux Web Server with a PHP engine, and a MySQL database. It really is not hard to get something like that back up and running again if it goes down, and it really shouldn't go down often.

The application I work on is clustered and replicated across 2 Weblogic J2EE servers, goes through an Apache Web Server, connects to an Oracle XML-based database (much more complicated than MySQL), has several upstream systems and dozens of downstream systems. If our application is down for more than an hour people get extremely upset. If it was down for a whole day I think I'd be straight down the dole office. My point? This is not rocket science, the club pays for this service and it should expect better reliability.

It is down again - however it looks like the frontend rather than the backend this time. Possibly even the connection has gone (or bandwidth has been exceeded).

As to Jim's post - well it is one of those things that cannot be described without that sort of language, but a shortened version for people not familiar with J2EE and multi-tiered/server farmed type implementations is, that it was broke.

Sorry guys. Simple explanation to what my last post implied is that there seemed to be some kind of installation or configuration cock-up where the web server (wot gives you the web pages) cannot connect to the database (wot gives you the data about topics, posts etc).

And guess what...yes...it's down again. Same problem.
