Hi,

Thought I'd share this here. It's a video my brother made of my dads koi carp pond. There's thought to be nearly 200 koi in there although a few have died/been killed. There are lots of photos in another thread on here if you'd like to see.

In the meantime, here's the video!

Thanks.

Must admit I don't know. My dad may well know. I just go round and watch them, I don't know much about them! I know sometimes the heron pokes at them and damages them if he can't quite hook them out, but I don't think that's the case here. He is a pretty old fish, and quite large too.

It's got carp pox. Fish herpes, basically. It's very common, a large proportion of ornamental fish are asymptomatically infected. It's unsightly and incurable but harmless, the lesions tend to appear at times of stress (particularly in the springtime) and will often clear up on their own.

Interesting. Thanks.

I don't see why they should be stressed. They have a 10m diameter, 2m deep pond to play about in! biggrin Maybe the heron stressed them out, although he seems to have gone now. Perhaps he got fed up of being zapped by the electric fences or being shot with the airgun.

Nice video, but shooting a heron with an airgun constitutes an offence under Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 s.1.

Consider it a joke in bad taste. Sorry. It's never been shot. In fact, we've not seen it for a long time. It used to be able to reach over the original electric fence, but I think since we've added another slightly higher fence it can't reach over, so it's given up.

The only thing we've ever shot with an airgun is coke bottles full of water actually!

Oh, they can appear at any time, that's just when they're most common. That particular fish may just have been - in human terms - a bit run down. They're like cold sores or shingles in humans.
