Following on from the "Cars from the 80's and 90's that are worth keeping" thread.

Are there any cars where you would be happy to see the "www.howmanyleft.co.uk" number drop to zero, if all examples were gone forever without trace never to be seen again?

I'll start: Maestro 1.3L. Embarrassing performance, rusty arches, door handles kept coming off. The worst thing - the old engine used for decades ensured that this turd of a car lasted for 100,000 miles in this state - all the way until I was 17 and could finally drive myself in.

No, none.

Even if I don't like cars, that's not a reason to want to see them vanish. Diversity is good.

There are plenty that I have no wish to drive again, though.

Not really. Even something truly terrible should be kept as a warning from history.

I don't think any proper 'car enthusiast' would want to see any car vanish completely.

As for your comments on the Maestro - well done for spouting the same stereotypical bullst rolleyes shame it's pretty much completely wrong.

To be fair, it sounds like he had one and he's recounting what his did, which he probably knows better than we do.

My parents 1.6 Maestro was a pretty good car though, at least on a par with the competition at the time.

I agree it does sound like they are talking about their car. But if it was a £300 banger.... than that's more the reason than it being a Maestro.

The 1.3 might have been old, but it matched all the other 1.3's at the time, be it Escort/Orion, Astra, etc.

That's what I thought TBH so seems fair enough. Have never owned/driven a Maestro but if it was built anything like the Montego my father in law had many moons ago his assessment seems fair.

Back on topic, I believe there is no place in this world, or any other, for the CityRover.

But maybe I'm just not a "proper car enthusiast". wink

actualy meant that it was his Dad's / Mum's car (and possibly that he didn't drive it).
Sounds like a typical 14 yr olds 'Why hasn't my dad got a (Insert latest fad car here).
My dad used to drive us around in a Reliant Regal Supervan, followed by an Austin 1300, would I like to see them all gone? No.

That's very naughty of you 3, and it's not like you to take things out of context...

Would you really want to see all City Rovers vanish, though? I certainly wouldn't - if nothing else the existence of a few on our roads should serve as a reminder that people will buy anything simply because of the badge on the nose.

I had a 1.3 maestro ex by van once & it was a hateful little thing, but probably no worse than its competition back in the day (mkIV escort van).

I'll give it one thing, we tried our hardest to kill it but it just kept going on, ran it low on oil, water, revved the nuts off it. Got to give hand it to something that will never die....

We had one! I can assure you all the above is true.

Edited to avoid people thinking you meant ALL Maestro 1.3s.

Id love to spot a 1.3 Maestro on the road in 10 years time!
Infact, Id love to see one now...
Totally boring cooking models are the obscure future classics, the unloved low spec models are the ones that really stand out.

Which will be cooler in 10 years time, a Sapphire Cosworth or a Sapphire 2.0 LX?

A Sapphire Ghia!

I think the Maestro brings back bad memories, in any case it's not missed in our family.
