i have been offered a friends 2002 audi TT which has a knocking noise "so he says" coming from it and he has just parked it up, he has offered it to me for £900, it has 90,000miles and is in reasonable condition, do you think it is worth a punt on to possibly sell as salvage or repair and run??

thanks

"knocking noise" - give PH a little more before expecting a final valuation!

It would be worth £900 even if it had a large space where the engine should be found

Engine must be fked. Have time and space to sell it for parts/spares?

Its worth way more than that as parts, even if the motor is a boat anchor.

i have bought the car off him unseen, the car still starts and drives, but is lacking power according to him, and also black smoke, which sounds like the turbo, possibly engine also,
Do you guys think it is worth repairing and keeping, saying it cost a £1000 for the engine etc, or putting on ebay and getting shot

All of the above, you could end up with a bargain if the knocking is something easy. Or, as suggested alot more in spares, which might be as much use to you, as a chocolate fireguard. Get it to the garage, for a diagnosis.

A decent 02 TT on autotrader seems to go for 3-4 k on autotrader a new engine and turbo is going to cost Alot more than 1k I'd get a few quotes there might be a £1000 profit in it at the end though

i am getting it into the garage tomorrow and will hopefully find out the problem, but i am guessing "engine"
Even if it was the engine, would it be worth repairing or just getting rid as salvage?

Check on eBay for the price of things like the wheels, lights, grills, haldex controller etc. Weigh that up against the quote for repair + the purchase price.

Well, it looks great in black. Get it to a good engine repair garage/VW specialist. Even a trashed bottom end will see you with a nice motor within current market price. You've got £3k max to play with, and still be within market price.

Proper Billy Bargain there, surely there must be loads of the 1.8T engines out there to pop in...

Like this one for a grand! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-AUDI-TT-QUATTRO-1-8...

If not, those wheels are worth about £350-£400, so you are half way to recouping your outlay.

Bargain, i'm gonna guess (based on internet gossip) blocked oil pick up pipe and knackered mains/crank if its knocking. Plenty of BAM engines about, plenty of AGU engines about, £4-500. Turbo sounds ok tbh with your description. I'd say fix it and use it. If you after a quick profit though sell as is should get £1500 for it surely?

Christ i would have bitten his arms off!

In for the ride, even in its current 'state', sounds like you may have picked up the bargain of the century!
