So I am definately going to be swapping my car this time next year for something nice as my pay is due to increase considerably (long time coming). I was hoping to hold on to the Civic until then as a daily drive but I'm not sure I can wait that long as I am bored in honesty.

I recon the Civic is probably worth around £2000 for a quick sale so I am contemplating swapping it for something cheap and much more fun for the next year which I can possibly keep as a second car afterwards.

So I know it is the standard answer to everything but this seems nice - http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3392146.htm

Anything else out there that may be equally fun and cheap? Would prefer a small coupe but not sure it's possible.

Oh and yes I will need to drive it everyday for the next year or so...

Mk2 or Mk3 MR2 Depending what you're after? Mk2 are capable of a lot of power outputs when some monies are spent on it. The Mk3 IMO is still quite a good looking car, Mid engined and weighs quite light.

If you're a fan of Honda's why not see if you can find a S2000 for within budget (if you have one)

IDK why, and I'm probably going to get slated for this, but I quite like MGF's and MGTF's... I have no idea why, but always seemed to appeal to me as quite a classy sort of cheapish sports car. Maybe its about time I go buy myself a set of scissors?

How about an old school mini? Something you wouldnt drive every day, but still capable of a good hoon when you fancy it?

Get a Eunos Roadster 1.8 - less rust and the S-spec based models had a Torsen limited slip diff.

Just be aware that:
- They're noisy.
- Not particularly comfortable (especially on Bilsteins!).
- You will get wet if it rains smile

Other than that you'll have an absolute blast.

If you want more refinement, get a Mk2.

And not great on fuel. Despite a small engine, small HP and lightweight, budget 25-28mpg with a MK1/2 MX-5. But they are fun! smile

Dunno... my first one was about that, the one I have now is returning low 30s in mixed use, and I dont exactly drive with economy in mind biggrin

Check the back of the sills and rear arches very carefully on a UK MX-5 of that vintage. I'd be amazed if they weren't showing signs of tin worm. I'd definitely look for a Eunos over a UK spec and IMO white is the worse colour for one of these. Also, I think this one is too expensive.

This is true. I can't believe how uneconomical they are. Even motorway cruising they seem to drink petrol (possibly the short gearing).

Not to p*ss on your parade, but my advice would be to wait until you've got the pay-rise in your bank before spending it. It won't be the first time that a 'promised' pay rise has failed to materialise...

I appreciate your advice and of course I wouldn't be doing that at all. Not spending that now I just want something cheap to get me until that point.

He's not spending it though, he's swapping his current car for something which is more fun for the same money. If the payrise doesn't turn up he can do the same again one would assume.

Lots of suggestions on here OP, but I would suggest £2000 would only get you fairly ropey examples of many of them. The MX-5 in your post looks like a good example and has clearly had a bit of love shown to it, although the seller is asking summer price. Good little car and an excellent introduction to RWD fun. Get if for nearer to £1500, look after it and I reckon you could easily turn it over for the same price next summer.

I have recently bought a mx5 (well eunos actually) and i am loving it if that helps?

That example although nice, seems abit expensive considering time of year etc?
