Does anyone own an RX8?
Discussion
I'm looking at swapping my Hyundai next year for an RX8, to get me onto the sports car ladder, as it is cheap insurance (I'm 18), due to insurance companies getting confused with the engine sizes.
However, I have heard that the rotary engine is a pain and needs rebuilding every so often. Is this true?
Has anyone ever had any other issues with the car? Is there anyone here who hasn't had any issues at all?
If anyone replies, could you tell me a bit about your car in the reply, e.g, age, mileage etc.
Thanks in advance

I don't think any insurance company would give 2 hoots about the engine size. They deal with statistics. Things like insurance group, and how frequently and how much they pay out to owners of RX8s.What they will put into their computer is essentially that you as an 18yo want to insure a 190/230 bhp RWD "sports car".
Now people used to play silly buggers with tax when that was based on cc. But I'd think RX8s come under the CO2 style. So you can't pull that one either.
If you find any car with no issues. Let us know.
Had two 'issues' with ours, both fixed under warranty. Rear ARB drop link worn and headlight sensors failed (common/known fault, post 2007 cars have it fixed, previous should be sorted under warranty).
Not had any other issues, got just under 30k.
If you're considering one with higher mileage get a compression test on it and walk if it comes back as poor.
Otherwise treat it as a rotary rather than a 'normal' piston engine and you should be fine.

I'd try and squeeze in a V8 myself... :-)

The best thing would be that unlike normally when getting a V8 the fuel consumption is shocking this way round the fuel consumption would be a nice surprise!

I have had 2 fuel injectors fail on my rx8. The bill to repair it was £1700 as the nice warm petrol poured through the exhaust and burned out the catalytic converter.
The insurance is not based on the 1300 cc engine size that is stated by mazda. The insurance is based on a 2600cc engine (something to do with swept volume).
Tax for cars pre 06 is £260. Post 06 it is the full £445.

I bought one recently, any question about it I asked jonnyfive (works for mazda) gave me loads of information
Instead of the Astra? How you getting on with it?
RX8 is mainly the OH car as I'm currently sorting out a discovery but don't have any sort of time frame on that atm.

Are you on first name terms with your local petrol station attendant yet?
