Was having a chat with an old business colleague over the holiday period that is looking to retire this year. As a pressie to himself he wants to buy a motor boat that he can spend cruising the Med over the summer and that will act as a base for his grown up kids on holidays etc. (Lucky sods!) He has had boats in the past but has not had one for about ten years.

He has a budget of up to a million and is looking for a second hand boat so as to get the most for his buck. His initial thoughts were a Sunseeker Predator but as I have no knowledge of such things was not able to advise.

What should he be looking for if not the Sunseeker, he wants something fast and sleek to fill that mid life crises in his own words biggrin

PS I forgot to add, he does not want a boat that will require a crew and it will be moored in the Med

Far more room on a flybridge boat rather than a sports boat like a Sunseeker so assuming there will be a few family members on it together I would be looking at a 50 - 60 foor Sunseeker or Princess.

As I said I have no real Knowledge of boats, what is a flybridge and how does it compare to a sports boat?

The term Flybridge is derived from 'flying bridge', an area above the boat from which to control it. Modern/current flybridge boats have an additional level above the main deck which will include not only the helm, but probably also some seating, sunbathing area, food prep/BBQ/wet bar etc....

A sports boat (unless its 80 foot plus) doesn't usually have this and tends to be a more sleek looking boat. It's a bit of a trade off. The flybridge option gives a bit more usable floorspace, the sports boat option is more style orientated. It's just a matter of personal taste, there isn't a huge difference in actual performance & economy. If your friend has had boats before he'll know the difference.

If you want examples, look a few of these up:

Flybridges:
Sunseeker - 'Manhatten' range.
Fairline - 'Squadron' range.
Princess - 'M Class' range.

Sports boats:
Sunseeker - 'Predator' range.
Fairline - 'Targa' range.
Princess - 'V Class' range.

I hope this helps.

Regards,
Olly

If he doesn't want a crew, he'll need someone good to take care of it, otherwise he'll be spending his first few days of each trip getting stuff fixed.
The Predators are probably one of the nicest boats Sunseeker have ever built IMO. I worked in product support for Sunseeker 9 years ago. The 75 is a lovelly thing, as far as motorboats go.
I did a delivery for the first 95 predator out of the factory, from Sotogrande to Mallorca. It was a genuine 40 knot boat. The sliding roof was a nighmare though!

A key issue is to be dealing with central agents - otherwise any deal will happen in spite of the involvement of brokers not because of them. I've also seen too many buyers swallow brokers' complete lies about likely running costs.

Proper Yacht, 66' so no bother to handle, millions spent and should go for a bit less than the €975k, already in the Med and if looked after a bit, will stay at that price for years.

I would stick the money in the bank and charter when required.

Princess V62 or new V57 (currently at London if he can stretch his budget a bit) if he fancies a sport boat. Flybridge wise a P60 (might sneak a second hand one its still fairly new) or P62 (now P64) second hand from the Princess range are all spacious boats that sit in the crew not essential size.
But I am a bit biased.

P.s. Princess 'M' class is the metre range of yachts not comparable to the Fairline and Sunseeker ranges mentioned above. Princess is just called the Flybridge range.

I stand corrected, and was in fact thinking of their 'Flybridge'(which I've always known to be refered to as their 'P' (P42 etc..)) range when I typed 'M'. Who'd employ me eh? In my deffence, it was very late!!!

Very nice. How are the running costs? How much should one budget for a boat like this?
Also, could one live on it permanently?
