Flickr messages about publishing your photos

Hi all,

I'm a relative newbie but enjoy taking pics of my local area. I've received a Flickr message from someone asking if they are happy for one of my photos to be used in a national newspaper next week.

I've agreed as it will be nice having something I've created published like this. Just wondering how often some of you other guys get these messages as some of the shots I've seen from PHers are absolutely amazing.

One of mine was used by Subaru in the U.S. Another on the front cover of a hill climb magazine. This was done via flickr.

I had a couple used in some guide book for Manchester and have one of my photos licenced via Getty's Call For Artists.

I get a few request through Flickr from people wanting to use pictures on blogs, usually car stuff.

Cool, not uncommon then from the sounds of it. Hopefully it's the first of many for me!

I had one from a marketing company that was working for the RNLI (lifeboats) about one of my pictures.

Started off very nice saying that they would like to use one of my pics, how nice it was etc etc, then said we don't want to pay you as the RNLI is a voluntary organisation reliant on donations etc etc.

What they hadn't counted on was that I've been a lifeboat man for over 15 years. Knowing that these people were getting paid for their time and services then having the audacity to ask to use my pictures for free really peed me off. They were told in a very polite way, seeing as though they wanted my services for free, to go forth and multiply unless they were offering their services for free to the RNLI. Funnily enough I never got a response. I still keep my eye out though in case they decided to use the image anyway.

If somewhere is getting paid to do a job, or it is a newspaper making money, then in my opinion they should pay. Doesn't matter what as long as the photographer is happy with the amount, but to say they want it for nothing when making money off it really annoys me.

I had someone use some of mine on a website about Kenya Tourism and a request from a researcher from the discovery channel wanting to use one on a program (Not sure if they did use it). It's for these random requests i renew the account every year

If only they would pay......
