taking the wishbones out shortly for a full overall and new bushes etc, cannot really afford to go the whole hog and spend £1000+ on decent shocks, have seen the £500 protect ones - has anyone fitted these and are there any good? (On racedirect website)

Absolutely fine for fast road, I had a set previous to my current dampers, a big improvement over "old" standard!

thanks mike much appreciated, if the wish bones are coming off it appears to make sense to do a few jobs at the same time, including uprating the springs and shocks which like the wish bones look original

They could be better I am sure, but they work without issue, and have kept working.
It's a bargain price for something to get you back on the road when there is a shortfall in the budget.

I did find the middle setting far too soft (i.e. the recommended 6 clicks starting point), but tyre pressure has a huge effect on the feel as well.
I also feel that the rebound is a little too sharp, by the time the shocks are 'stiff' enough, and that ideally a better spring should be used.

That said, the car is on the road, working fine and a vast improvement over the garbage I was left with when the previous shocks failed.
In all probability, a short time in the hands of an expert, would improve things further in my case.

I should have said, if you renew, ask for standard plus 20% springs as standard is way too soft.

You will still have good ride quality, just a bit sharper and won't bottom out.
