Slow,
Handle badly,
Complicated suspension,
Avoid the autos like the plague

B6 has a nice interior though.

It's only a fantastic engine if you find yourself in a time warp and its 2001 again.

It's an awful boat anchor of a noisy, unrefined, slow, rattly thing.

It gets good mpg, which is handy, as you'll need to save some money up to sort all the bork out that infests 10 year old 8 owner Audi diesels.

Speaking from experience having a B5 (1995) I can honestly say its the most reliable car I have owned and I have had a few motors over the years.
You wont have any problems with rust as the cars are galavanized and the build quality is 2nd to none, also mechanical components are cheap as they are shared with the VAG range.
Then only things mine has needed in the last 16 years are service items and a clutch, it still has the original exhaust, now thats quality.
The only problem with the B5 is that leg room is restricted for rear seat passengers if they are on the tall side.

Yes it is, and I really wouldn't want the old 1.9 lump in one of those. Fine for 1300kg of 15-year-old B5, emphatically not fine for a very modern car like that.

I would say the 1.9 TDI is about the least bork 10 year old diesel you can buy (yes, they have common issues but less than most) and generally less bork than the later 2.0 TDI. It is for this reason they still command a lot of money - even in the older 95-01 A4.

The B6 (01-05) A4 with the 1.9 TDI is generally a very solid car and still very popular. In many ways the pre-facelift make more sense as once you get to the later model they do begin to look a bit expensive compared to what else you can buy.

I had a 04 bora highline a few years ago and just excepted the fact it was a derv and really enjoyed the performance from the gutsy 130pd engine. It made motorway journeys more enjoyable and effortless.

Yes, I could/should have said a car made over a decade after the engine in question was introduced, if we're being picky. I meant that the 1.9TDi was a very aged unit to have in a car costing 2007MY money, while in a thousand-pound shed would be fine - not that the B7 was an especially cutting edge car, quite the reverse now I've learned you could still get those rather than exclusively the 2.0 engine!

Is it the PD unit at that age, or the common rail?

The PD diesels are about as good as they get. Pretty reliable, and pretty economical. The later common rail engines have, like all other common rail diesels, no end of issues.
