Just thought I would let you hear of my woes.
Had some light storm damage to my Silver 6tt. Branch lightly scratched the lacquer.
Now I have been restoring Campers and doing full resprays to mirror finish for nearly 20 years so I know how to use G3 Compound and machine & mop heads,
However, being a bit cautious, I even sprayed the G3 with water just to make it even finer and hence be less aggressive. I applied only 10 seconds worth of compounding with medium pressure and went straight through the lacquer. What a bummer. There can only be the slightest layer of lacquer on these cars.
I have posted a picture of the latest paint job I'm working on atm so I'm no fool.
Be very weary if you decide to buff out scratches on your Pork.

This is the camper i have restored form a basket case.

Just a thought but might not be the paint that it left the factory with.

Min 8 year old car will have had some paintwork.

Generally true, but my other car is 9 years old and has had no paintwork done!

Very much depends which panel.

Anywhere aft of the A pillar should be orignal if there has been no crashes but bonnet pu and wings could have been done many times.

Slightly off topic, but paint related.............

My front pu gets resprayed every second year, as despite it being a weekender it does come out in all weathers and the state of the winter roads with gravel and stones mean chips galore.

My pu was last resprayed in November, the car was stored for 4 weeks to let the paint gas and then sealed and waxed, it came out for a brief shake down and then the 991 launch at Glasgow OPC, then one 250 mile PH Ecosse Hoon on 27th December and after a wash ànd wax I now have 17 stone chips on the front pu which I have had to touch in with Chipex, some have been successfully masked but 2 or 3 are right through the base coat.

Life goes on......not sure if paint is not what it was.......or if the roads are worse......or I'm driving harder.........or my OCD is getting worse but I don't remember chips to this extent on previous cars.

Might have to try the protection film next time but thats's 400 quid on top of the respray cost. scratchchin

I don't use a rotary on plastic bumpers if I can help it. DA is a safer option.

Its the front drivers side wing about 12" behind the head lights on the top. good call about it might have had a touch up already. I haven't noticed any tell tails signs but tbh haven't looked that hard.

The water-based paints that all manufacturers have to use nowadays seem to be very much less durable than the solvent-based paints of old.

Standard lacquer coat on Porsche seems to be VERY thick normally so almost certainly not original paint.
Did you use a paint gauge prior to the job?

No for the very reason that I did almost no compounding. I would have understood if I had to work at removing the scratch but this took very very little effort.
Plus I dont normally do repairs only full restorations so I know how much paint I have applied. Having all the equipment I do get asked by mates if I would give their car a compound and polish but always decline for this very reason. I was just so surprised at the speed and ease the lacquer was removed.

Sorry to hear about the paint, may have been patched up before though.

Not just paints either, just lost 150m of fencing that had rotted away after just 4 years due to the health and safety crap preservatives being used on timber these days.

You would be made very welcome and if you came in the Pork you can park in our private secure courtyard and not the B&B car park.

Sounds like cheap air dry product or cheaper paint was used, ask your body shop to plasticise the laquer coat and only use premium materials.

Hi, had all 3 of our Porsche cars machined polished and the company we use have never gone through the paint... Almost certain that it must of had paint before then. The cayenne gets a regular machine polish to the n/s doors and wing as constantly being forced into hedge rows by other road users!

Frank, it'll almost certainly have had a SMART repair at some point in it's life. I owned a ChipsAway franchise between 1997 and 2002. The laquer we used was probably 85% solvent and 15% laquer. This allowed you to do repairs and blend them out in places you wouldn't normally attempt a repair.

I polished two deep scratches out my Basalt black 996 GT2 (and damage to the laquer when a bird (the feathered type)biggrin took a dump on it. In every instance I flatted the laquer damage and scratches out with 2000 W&D before blending with 3000 W&D. Only then did I use a mop with G3 or G4 (and always with water) before finishing with machine polish and a coat of wax.

As you'll appreciate, you can remove a lot of laquer with 2000 W&D. On none of the occasions did I go through to the base coat.

HTH.

On a slightly different note but paint related, noticed a couple of stone chips on the roof of mine today, (guards red)and have a few on the wings and bonnet plus a small scratch on the wing thanks to a wker in a car park the other week, would it be worth using a chip away service, would it be ok for the scratch as well or is it better to use a body shop? Never used them before and don't have a clue what they charge. I know the wings and bonnets often get painted but would hate to start on the roof!

Can you post some pics
I've got a guard red 968 and done the stone chips myself with touch up and it looks fine. Not as good as paint job clearly but after wet&dry, polish and so on can't see them.
Got a really good dent guy who took out three dents this week - one from a stone chip.
Have no experience of chips away but read mixed report on PH so decide to have a go.

Will get some pics posted asap, not sure about doing them myself!!!! there are no dents though just chips and the scratch, just hate the thought of having bodywork painted.
