For a period of time I had a 205 GTi as second car, I eventually got rid as I just wasn't using it enough, there was also the fact I was paying £500 per year in tax/MOT/insurance for the pleasure of it sitting in my garage.

I suspect I know the answer already but is there any cheap way of running a second car?

Love the idea, hate the cost.

Run it in spring and summer, SORN it, tuck it away and cancel the insurance for autumn and winter?

What I normally do is just have a old car for the winter months and a good car for the summer, that way I use 6months tax on each and just transfer the insurance over, but obviously remember to sorn both cars when they are not in use for the 6 months, overwise you end up with an £80 fine.

Classic (pre '73) free tax. Classic insurance on a limited mileage policy. Garaged to keep the bodywork half decent. Decent socket set to keep the mechanicals running well. Get one that is already LPG converted then you are driving around for 73p per liter. Cheapest way I can think of.

I'm selling my MX-5 at the moment for this reason, though it's costing me nearer £1k/year in insurance, tax and MOT.

Add into that I am gaining a company car with a fuel card which means I will use the mazda even less.

My solution will be to go back to a quick bike as a second fun 'vehicle'. I can insure a 600cc sportsbike for around £300, and though I've lost touch with how much tax is I know for sure it is only around £50 compared with £240 for the MX5.

For my two, I run each a week at a time. I'll use one of them exclusively during the week to get to work and back, and for any shopping/social trips on weekdays. On the weekend I'll switch to the other car and run that for the next week too. Next weekend, I switch back for the week etc etc. Some trips, of course, require breaking this habit, but by running a weekly schedule I enjoy both cars and also spread the miles for insurance sake.

You say that like it stops you doing it!

The two ways, OP, are to either go classic as someone suggested so that the legalities cost you very little (bonus lack of depreciation), or to get something that you really can and will use every weekend so it never feels like a waste. I know I wouldn't worry about a monkey's worth of tax and insurance if I had something to fly around in at the weekends!
