Ignition Light on, any Ideas? - Is it the Alternator
Discussion
Hi all, have just finished a 3 month session of work on my Griff (refurbed diff, clean & re-waxoil chassis etc). Went out for its first run this afternoon (lovely to get her back on the road), great drive really pleased, but, the red ignition light was on, it dimmed noticeably when accelerating but was bright when stationary, but did flicker. The voltmeter showed a healthy 14 to 15 volts. I keep a C-Tek charger connected when not in use, she starts first time and turns over nice and fast. Lights were not dim when I put them on and you could hear the alternator whining with the load. Could it be a poor connection? Pete

Had the same thing on my Griff a while ago and ended up being the 100A fuse and holder underneath. As the engine got warm it got worse. If not that could be the connections on the back of the alternator or the brushes, worse case the alternator/regulator has gone.

Thanks guys, I believe its the alternator, most likely the regulator. It apears to be charging, but from experience this sort of problem is a precursor to complete failure of regulator/rectifier or alternator. It gets so hot underthere I am not too surprised. The current alternator was fitted about 2001 so has had a reasonably long life in the heat! I am currently watching a suitable alternator on ebay which may go for reasonable money. All the best, Pete
Fitted new alternator today, cured the ignition light staying on. I had prior to that tried a new regulator block but did not cure problem. At least I have a new regulator spare! Shall probably buy a refurb kit (less regulator) and clean & rebuild the old alternator as a spare. Got a good deal on new alternator (£62) as I recognised the model as a Land Rover unit, much cheaper than actual TVR associated item!! Pete

If it's charging (voltage measured at battery around 14 volts) and the light is staying on it could be just a diode failure in the alternator. Some makes can be easily repaired, others require a complete diode/regulator pack = new/recon alternator........
Hi Tivver500, yes I think you are right, it was not the regulator as I changed that, believe the rectifier block at fault (the alternator is 10 years old). It was easier to just change over to a new alternator (especially at only £62). It is my intention to buy a refurb kit at some time and make up a good spare. All the best, PeteGRFNUT said:
Chaps can anyone give me the part number of the land rover alternator, I'm guessing its a discovery 200 for the year. I polished mine some years back so no labels left. I've a 92 4.3. Plenty on flea bay that look identical but noted different part numbers so not sure of load rating.
Hi there, the alternator is a Land Rover 2.5 200Tdi fitment (I have one of these so easy for me to compare). I recently got my replacement to fit my 4.3 '92 Griff (see above thread) from eBay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DISCOVERY-2-5...The faulty one that came off the Griff was a Marelli make No. DRA3777. The one I got from eBay shop 'ajcompltd' was really good. pleased with it especially at £62.99.
All the best, Pete
