Evening Car Maintenance Courses - College
Discussion
Hi All
Has anyone on here ever done an evening car maintance course at College? I'm really keen to learn more about replacing basic parts such as brake pads etc but the descriptions of most these courses aren't very detailed and I don't want to book onto a course in case it ends up being a course about topping up screen wash and checking tyre pressure!!!
I noticed Stevenson College in Edinburgh is doing both a Basic and Advanced evening course. Has any one done the advanced one, and if so, what kind of depth does it go into? Even advice about the basic courses in other Scottish colleges would be appreciated.
Cheers

To be honest a haynes manual, youtube, a set of spanners and some patience will probably be a better way to learn. I did it this way and now i'm happy changing brakes, doing oil changes and have even done a full suspentional overhaul and throttle body replacement too. Am currently looking at changing the vanos seals in my old BMW. Consumable stuff like brakes and oil are a doddle.

I did the basic car maintenance course at stevenson. Personally thought it was pritty handy.
Learnt how to fit brake discs and pads, check and renew fluids (engine oil to the battery acid)
Also goes through a list of common faults and problems...
What i liked about the course the most is, they have the open garage doors from the car park so your allowed to bring in your own car to get looked at....for free

I did one at the old Broughton High School years ago, was a nice old guy with a fetish for Hillman Imps that took it.
Couldn't tell you what I picked up from that and from friends/practice over the years since but it was a step in the right direction none the less. Why not go for the basic and see how you get on from there, surely the option to do the next will still be there?
