As part of the wider investigation, more than 250 motorists who supplied their NIPs to Lowndes and Foster were arrested. Some of those have been convicted and received custodial sentences.

Now obviously what they have done is 'wrong' and clearly illegal........ but do we really want to be locking people up for a crime which has no real victims? Absolute madness, we don't have enough police to deal with real crimes or enough prison spaces for dangerous or repeat offenders..... yet they bang up motorists who were most likely normal law abiding citizens that just made a silly mistake in an attempt to avoid points (probably to keep their license so they could keep a job paying taxes!).

How do you know there are no victims. Presumably, most of the people involved were on 9-ish points and were about to get banned. These drivers, proven to be unsafe on the road, continued on their merry way, carrying on being knobs on the road. I'm not going to get all Daily Mail about it but it's not inconceivable that people have been hurt as a result of drivers not being banned who should have been.

Hero ish.

Only a hero if he was selective and avoided penalties for those who didnt deserve them ie motorway and dual carriageway.

In his place i would have been more careful and destroyed any evidence. He should also have had a break/firewall in place to prevent anyone know who he was a middle man maybe. Changed every week.

Limit the amount of people you assist to maybe 5-10 a week and charge around 1-200 a time.

If you want to go bigger set up a much more complicated system and as ever ALWAYS either destroy evidence or make sure it cannot be linked to yourself.

I'm with Papa on this.

If you're going to spend that amount of cash to avoid the points, you've got to be bloody desperate, which means you haven't taken heed of the earlier punishments you'll have received.

One member of my family got 3pts for doing 81mph in a 70 in good conditions (I was in the car), yet I would say she is an safe driver. Another relative has been driving for 30+ years but he is a major accident just waiting to happen. He has had several small bumps where he has rear ended people and 2 "road rage" incidents meaning nobody will get in the car with him any more! Yet he has a totally clean license because he hasn't been snapped going 10% +3 over the limit as of yet....

Therefore, I don't buy the argument that point are necessarily an indicator of driver safety.

In any case, I don't disagree with bans or other penalties, I just think that jailing people for quite a petty crime seems like a waste of time and money. Unless all these motorists were career criminals and this was the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak........... although I think that is unlikely as it seems to me that career criminals always get a slap on the wrist where as joe bloggs who makes one mistake always gets st on.

How would you suggest a normal law abiding tax payer would get in touch with scum like that? What would tip a law abiding tax payer over to risk becoming party to fraud and real crime for the sake of dodging a fixed penalty. Wake up.

It's true

Quick tip to criminals, wear your seatbelt, don't speed, tax and insure your vehicle. Will save you loads of hassle and help avoid a conviction for other crimes.

Saying they are "proven to be unsafe" is a bit of a stretch.
