Would appreciate some views on how the various tyres on this list compare. Running a reasonably heavy car - say 1300kg - I've only used R888s to date and have found them to be outstanding.
Availability seems to be an increasing issue however (I read somewhere that they are now discontinued?) and am just considering the options.
Has anyone tried the R1R? How did it compare to the R888?
I'm trying to manage cost, so the A048s aren't really an option.

how does kumho compare with the 888? i have heard from people that really rate the kumho but they haven't used the 888 so cant compare the 2.personally i rate the 888 as grippier and longer lasting than the pilot sport cups and grippier than the A048's. the dunlops are a much more expensive but have heard they are better than the 888's.
I ran the kumho v70a/v700 ( dual marked ) tyre last year in the scottish hillclimb championship, must say they are an excellent tyre, demon tweeks actually did me the best deal. I was using them on my 3 series, not quite 1300 kgs but still in the same ball park, i used super softs for hills and on trackdays ran mediums, i would advise to go for a hard compound for circuits in the dry and a medim for the wet.
I can say hand on heart that it was these tyres that helped my cLass win, class record and newcomers championship this year as most others ran 888 or ao48.
Once i got the pressures perfected these tyres were awesome, i swear by them!!

sounds like kumho have come on a long way since i last ran them in 2004. they were rubbish on the tasmin.
we ran the hards as mandated by the series, but even then more than half a dozen heat cycles and they were trashed..
on the old anglesey circuit, going out in qualifying, pushing from the start i had 4 laps to get in a time before they would start to drop off..
when we went to the dunlop doj1. it was like night and day...
my experience with them though a good few years out of date now.. they must have worked on the compounds, as the tread pattern looks the same..

Haha, not at all, i actually went out to buy r888 but the didnt hace my size in stock so i went for kumho as the were in stock in the right compound and i could get them delivered next day, the big plus was tht they were cheaper too!
As for my driving, i doubt that had alot to do with it, although i was very comfortable in the car, and i was up against higher budget cars too, i just think the tyres gave me an advantage, certainly in the damp conditions we get in scotland !!

Used 888's for years. Great all round tyre, just 'fair' in wet though, but always had strange tread wear, a 'hollow' part way across the tread when 2/3rds worn. Alan Meaker from Toyo motorsport told me this is a characteristic of the 888. My car weighs 1200 plus me btw.
Load index is high on 888, so preferable on heavy car?
Also used a set of Silverstone FTZ RR. Superb grip in the dry and are the quickest tyre Ive ever used but at the expense of wear, still not too bad. If its fastest lap time you are after I would seriously consider these. Not bad on price either.
Federal FZ-201? A friend of mine Bo Nielson used these on a very quick 'Timeattack' Astra (check track day forum) and reckons they are much better than 888's. Cheaper an lasted longer.
Federal RSR 595? Fitted a set to a 300bhp Fiat Coupe and think they were pretty poor compared to the above. Awful when cold, not that good when wet! (Only my opinion of course)
I may try the FZ 201 next.

slicks are not measured like treaded tyres...I've been looking for recommendable 255/40 17 slicks for a while now, and bumped to the FZ-201 from Federal. After reading lots of positive input (from these forums too..) i bumped to this :

I would suggest your looking for 255/630R17 - as in 255 wide, 630mm OD, 17" rim

One would notice that yes, actually the tire in question isn't a full slick, but a semi, and yes i do know that slicks have different sizing methods (not all of them, mind you.) so yes - you can get track tires in common sizing, like the federal listed as 255/40R17.
And no, they aren't the only manufacturer that does this. So! Back to the subject, shall we? Input on the FZ201 etc?

I ran Federal FZ201 last season on a 980kg (inc me post race) FWD car.
Size was 195-50/15
Save your money and run R888's instead.
FZ201 are slow to come on, typically 2 to 3 laps even with an aggressive green flag lap.
I usually do 15/20 min races, I did a 40 min race at Anglesey and they went off after 30 mins, despite a Safety Car period.
The only benefit was they lasted nearly a full season.
edited to add, I am running them on a 1150kg 4WD in 2013, hopefully they will be better on a heavier car

I hav run R888's in the TVR sprint championship for 8 years now, and won it 4 times using them. This year I thought i would try the Kuhmos - went for medium compound cos the car weighs 1000kg and i just could not get on with them, no grip when cold not predicatble - bloody awful things - it could of course just be my driving style and car set up and they will work really well for someone else. I sold them after 200 miles and 2 sprints, so it was an expensive mistake and went back to R888's and have just won the championship using them which i think says it all. Jes
