Single occupant cars to be banned from lanes
Discussion
TV report tells us the latest "idea" to clear congestion on M.ways is to have express (HA) lanes which can only be used by cars with two or more occupants.
Drivers of single occupant vehicles using the lanes will be (surprise surprise), fined.
Looks as if sales reps are about to go around in two's or perhaps rent a passenger will take off.
Perhaps inflatable passenger makers would be a good stock to invest in.
To be trialled on the M1 and M3. No doubt it will be a great success!!!!!

I think it has more to do with slowing the other two lanes down so much that: "in the Governments eyes" single occupant motorists will say "sod this" and use the non-existent "public transport" instead. Or am I just cynical (again)
can you imagine the tailbacks when 3 lanes are squeezed into two!!!!
One good thing! they won't need speed cameras then will they?

In Nottingham, in parallel with the construction of the new tram line to Hucknall, they improved the parallel Hucknall Road out from the ring road. I assumed that meant eliminating the few pinch points that stopped it being two lanes each way all the way. Would be easy to do as it runs past golf courses or between waste scrubland most of the way.
Nope: they put in cycle lanes and right turn lanes.
The latter feeding through tight right angles into narrowed junctions.
They'd already put bus lanes from the ring road into the junction with Mansfield Road which takes you the rest of the way into town.
They are currently "improving" Mansfield road, which will narrow it and restrict access to non public transport.
And I've just noticed that there is yellow paint all over the junction which at first looks like it's to improve the very sharp acute left turn:
They've marked up the left pavement for widening.
But they've widened the central refuge by the same amount.
Oops, and the actual kerb line comes to a sharp point instead of having some curve round it!
Then they will claim that car use has fallen.
And surprise, surprise, tram use has increased.
From zero.
At a cost of a mere Fifth of a £Billion!
Yep! 25 miles of lorries in the first lane, 35 miles of cars in the middle lane, and 6 cars with a driver + a dummy in the 3rd lane. Makes sense that doesn't it!
Yes I think the truth is they want us out of our cars by any devious means they can find. Any excuse to harass us into leaving our cars at home.
40 years ago that might have been possible! we had public transport then.

When will cyclists be allowed to ride on the path? I've missed that announcement.
BTW, I think I read that the HOV lanes will be the additional ones that are being built at present. They don't plan to remove existing lanes. I still think it's ludicrous but it's not (yet) quite as bad as making 3-lane Mways into 2-lanes everywhere. In the US where HOV lanes exist they're on 6-lane Mways, not our paltry 3-lane ones. But if it works in USA it must be ok here too....
I support HOV lanes where there are also plenty of other lanes for people to queue in. 4 lane sections of the M25 for instance. I travel to the US a lot and this works well there - people do car share.
I don't see any money being involved here - in fact if people car shar then there will be less fuel/road tax for HM Gov't. Refreshing change from the usual ideas they have.

Time to buy a blow-up doll!
Mind you the wife will never believe the excuse...
When my Mum and dad went to visit my Sister in Dayton Ohio, they were standing at the BUS stop, taking a trip down town (my mum LIKES buses FFS) and a car stopped and offered them a lift. It turned out to be one of my sisters neighbours who admitted to picking anyone up, if they got to use the 2 or more lane into town. Thus saving about 3/4 of an hour.
I predict the Death of public transport, more muggings and car jacking and sales of Blow up dolls will increase.
Saw a little snippet on the news last night showing car sharing in the States (didn't catch where). Everyone just pitched up to a car park in suburbia first thing in the morning, then drivers would pull up, say where they were going and give people a lift. Question is, if you accept a few quid from your passenger (petrol costs and so on), do you become an illegal minicab?

Will bikes be included in this daft scheme then? Because on the one hand we're told just how dangerous bikes are, and on the other they're telling us to cram a pillion on! LOL
On my mountain bike ? A Pillion ? I sometimes put my daughter on the handlebars are ride around the garden.
