Great lunches in central London

I'm keen to hear about the stars of lunch in London.

I'm NOT talking about 'lunch at the Ivy', but smaller places which offer a great quick lunch.

Maybe takeaway only; maybe they have some seats. But they have spent time and care in selecting great ingredients and/or thought creatively about opportunities to satisfy beyond the dreaded packed sandwich.

I'm not specifically excluding chains, but the chances are that they will be trailing behind some great independents you can share with the world.

Go liquid- the wine bar in Fortnum & Mason is a gem, excellent service, £10 corkage on their extensive selection of wine, they do some snacks and a stonkingly good cheese board.

Everyone i've taken there loves the place.

Food for thought on Neal Street. Veggie only, but don't let that put you off. The standard of quiche is so high that even a dedicated meat eater can appreciate it.
Cardinals / 5 star on North Row ( just off Park Lane). Decent family run italian. Generous bowls of pasta, risotto etc.

You could also try Lido Cafe around the back of Oxford Circus by John Princes St, we used to eat in there after lectures when I was at uni in times gone by.

Fuzzies grub, there's a few dotted around the City. They do a full roast dinner (meat, roast tatties, veg, Yorkshire and gravy) in your choice of bread!!! You need to factor in a sleep for the afternoon though. Proper beast of a sandwich

I'd add the Vital Ingredient chain - quick and fresh, pasta if you want carbs, salad/chicken and soup if not. There seem to be quite a few of these now and they became a staple in the office because you customise your own.

Jun Tanaka was on Saturday Kitchen yesterday and apparently he has an Airstream Trailer that rocks up at Liverpool Street during the week as a street kitchen, serving up Bistro style food as a take away.

Does Fuzzies still exist? I used to have them all the time circa 2004 but was under the impression they had gone under. I loved being able to choose between rare/medium/well done for a beef sandwich and then have them squish roasties in with the back of a spoon and pour gravy on the whole thing. What memories,
