My drivers side window rattles when shutting with the window fully or partially open. When fully down it's fine. The rear of the window also doesn't fully close and I have to pull it up a couple of cms.

I've got the door cards off, but not sure what is causing the problem. Is the rear runner meant to have an insert all the way from to to bottom, as I can only see material in the bottom few cms of it? The carrier mechanism also has a bit of movement which allows the glass to rotate slightly. Is this normal?

Yeah, there is a rubber guide within the metal runners (one runner at the front and one at the back of the glass).

Mine had the same problem - rubber was lying in the bottom of the door. Just removed the metal runner, and glued the rubber bit back in.

Thanks for that. How do you remove the runner?

I've never removed the runners myself but these pics might help you. Note, they are pics. of the N/S door, they also show the felt strip in the ali. runner. However, you might find it easier to remove the glass instead of the runner as you may find that the runner won't come out with the glass in place.

A couple of bolts on the side of the door (above the latch), and another couple under the door itself.
Quite easy really

This was indeed the problem.

I had to remove the window then pushed the insert back up. Everything back to normal now (minus lots of skin!)
