I have been looking into this for a while and I'm really not sure.

- Does the adjustability of PASM - ability to switch it on and off allow you a more suitable drive depending upon cionditions? The CR has a fixed set up which I believe is somewhere between the two.

- The weight difference is negligable as most cars have the aircon and stereo specced back in. Does the extra 10hp make a noticable difference?

- All other things are available on both. Personally I would want PDK, sports exhaust and sports seats.

- I found a manual S(without PASM) and a manual R to be very similar in behavior on a 30 minute test drive. I also thought a PDK equipped R was fantastic. Haven't yet tried a CS with PDK - would you expect it to be very different to the CR and is PASM an essential option?

Any view accepted - although anyone suggesting I should be looking at a 993 will be ignored.

If you have test driven both, you already know the answer.
I myself would buy the R in manual with buckets.
So every one wants what they want.

I have driven both and am not sure. Does the CR have hidden depths to plumb over time? Also , is PASM essential on a CS? 19" wheels would be needed to fill the mahoossive arches.

Gen 2 caymans ride high a look a bit silly.
Cayman r is lower and looks better.

Not fussed about PASM to soft off to hard on.

Only about 110 CAYMAN R made so will be easier to sell imo

Mint one for sale opc leicester 44k only 2k miles.

Have to agree about Gen2 Caymans looking like they are on stilts, what were Porsche thinking?

Leicester car is £49k according to the official site. Are you assuming a discount of £5k for cash sir?
Why are you not a fan of PASM? Cheers.

Had a quick look at the lei car thought it was 44k must have mixed it up with the black one they just sold.
Had PASM on my CAYMAN S before and liked it. But cannot fault the spyder sus on my drive today.

The resale and the lower ride height would be enough for me to choose it over standard.
I just think the gen 2 Caymans look stupid with a 5" arch gap, enough for me not to buy one.

i have no idea, but would assume that a cayman s can be at least as good as a cayman r if you have somebody work on the suspension and take some weight out (buckets etc) - the car is a marketing exercise imo to sell additional chassis. at least the spyder is a marketing exercise with a slightly different body, still marketing car though. In any case i might be wrong, but am sure we will be able to judge in 5 years time by looking at the price diffeence between am s amd am r withthe same spec (give or take)

Porsche might have a problem with this as I assume the warrantee would be invalidated if anyone adjusted the suspension. Do you really think that any limited edition Porsche which isn't a 911 or sportier would be considered special? The Spyder and Cayman R might be different and a little special but will people really care in the fuure?

My humble appologies - obviously when I said "on " I should have said "sports mode on" and when I said "off" I should have said "leave it in the standard, default normal setting". What a shocking mistake to make, sorry. Thanks for the spoon.

I have not seen a Cayman, of any type or age that looks like it sits well in its arches. The arches are too big, I have 19s on my gen 1 'S' and there is still a massive gap.

How come I'm not seeing any Cayman R's with paint to sample in lurid colors? There was an earlier thread that made a lot of sense - get a CR manual box, bucket seats and pts. It would be ideal drivers car. I looked it up and have only seen a few odd PTS colors for the CR - dark purple iirc. Some Mexico Blue or Rivera Blue would be nice.

I think it's a number of factors, most importantly being that they released a limited edition run out model at a bad economic time. There were three already bright colours for free (peridot green, speed yellow & guards red) but like the spyder, I'd guess that most cars weren't configured by customers but by opc's & Porsche themselves.

I'd agree that if you want the options like pdk & sports seats a cayman S is probably the better buy given the discounts available.

But as always you pays your money & takes your chance smile if you like the look of the R, with it's aero kit, wheels, stripes & suspension & you can afford it then why not? It's your car so you build it how you want, I loved the one I borrowed, not sure I'd see the point in one without the manual shift & bucket seats but that's just me.

The sports seats are much easier to get in & out of & if you're using it daily & in a lot of traffic I guess pdk makes sense too, it might be slightly at odds with the "ethos" of what the marketing team are selling but that's what the options list is there for, & going by the amount of spyders/R's that are for sale in this spec there's plenty who agree

I originally wanted Riviera for mine but PTS wasn't available when I ordered. in fact it wasn't even available on the Spyder until the last month or so of production.

The other problem - other than the £2,400 price - is that I was told that even if PTS was available it could add up to six months to the order time. Not sure if that's true, but the point was moot anyway.

I can't remember seeing any Rs with PTS thus far, but I'm assuming the Porsche made it available eventually.

yes lowering is key. I'm not sure I would now buy a modern porsche with the standard suspension. It would have to be a PASM car or of course a GT / R model etc. which sit lower still.

Yes of course but larger silvery wheels in a dark section of the car give the slight illusion that the holes are filled better (since both tyres and wheel arch gap are both black). My real point is that on Boxsters and Caymans in particular, the wheel arches themselves are too big.

Depends on the price difference - I'd have the R if price difference was negligible, but, for example, I certainly wouldn't feel the need to change from my Gen 1 S (with PASM) to an R - wouldn't be a sufficient difference to justify the change in my view (having spent a little over an hour in a PDK R at the Experience Centre).

As to PASM - depends on usage - I never ever EVER put it in 'Sport' on the road. However, my car runs on 19s, and I find the ride significantly better with PASM in default setting than a normally sprung car and that's important to me as it's not just a toy. Not vital though I wouldn't have thought, merely a 'nice to have' option along with stuff like PCM, though at resale you'll get sod all back for it, unlike PCM, which is supposedly 'important'.

PDK, I would have thought, would be the same between both cars though I've only driven a Boxster S with PDK. Good system, but not sure I'd have it - still a bit old fashioned when it comes to gears...
