hi i have a 1999 996 carrea 4s on 80,000 miles i brought it last july with a noise. in 4/5 gear at 1000/1200 revs i put my foot down and a grinding noise happens, i took it back to the garage and they said they relaced the tourqe converter with reconditiond one , 3 cluches and front propshaft this made the noise quierter but did not fix the problem then it went to a nother garage but thye could not sort the problem. i took the car to a porsche garage 40 miles away and could not get the car to make a noise, think is was because the car was hot. have you any idea what the problem maybe?

Hi, your car is a 996 C4 the S is for the transmission tiptronic S, as for you fault it will need looking at by a Porsche specialsit that can rectify auto atic transmisson faults. Who has looked at it so far ?

You sure?...surely you can get C4S manuals, the S in C4S relating to the suspension.

Cannot get a 1999 C4S, hence its is a 'C4' tiptronic 'S'.

Hi, what has mercedes got to do with your porsche? Your gearbox was never in a mercedes? Only later transmissions were derived from a mercedes ml...?

I have owned MERCEDES that make this vibration and had always wondered what on earth it was. And must have been normal as have had it on 2 or 3 models. Perhaps it is similar to what you describe but unsure...get it checked out by a proper reputable specialist. If nothing seems amiss just keep driving it, unless you notice any problem in the shifting.

I have the same noise coming underneath the car at low rpm, gear 3 or 4 at the begining and now even gear 2. Live in dubai, I went to some porsche specialists in dubai (ARM, house of car and finally porsche dealer). All different diagnostic : could be drive front shaft or rear differential and the worse gear box it self. All or course ask huge amount to fix the pb. Went finally in cheap garage dealing with old porsches, and the diagnostic is torque converter to be changed\repaired. The garage proposes to do the job with a very low price but without guaranty to fix the pb. Garage is not descent, and I do not trust it. Any advice? I have seen Daniel obrien post, did solve the issue finally

Problem resolved: converter repaired and overhauling of the gear box. The result simply fantastic, I have recovered my Porsche. Cost 2000 €

Was that done by the dodgy garage you didn't trust, and do you trust them now?
