Ok guys, just looking for some decent suggestions really.
I am 24 soon and in a couple of months will be looking to sell my Alfa 2.0 JTS and 67 Ford Mustang fastback V8, for a single car.
I am looking for something a bit different and exciting but that i can use every day as well. I dont have any kids or anything so it doesnt need to be huge, but reliability is a must as is not too bad fuel consumption (due to my daily commute distance)
Am not really a fan of Jap stuff (hence the american muscle car!) and fast BMW's and Merc's etc dont really interest me. Ideally i'd get a V8 S197 Mustang but may not be able to due to the commute diatance i do every day (MPG!).
so can you think of anything that:

1. Is a bit different/exciting to drive
2. Around 12-14K, (or less)
3. Insurance isnt riddiculous for a 24 year old with 5years or so NCB
4. Pretty reliable
5. Has 4 seats (preffered)
6. Fuel consumption not riddiculously low
7. Car i could park almost anywhere and feel worried about thw whole time

might be a big ask cos i know its a lot to ask, any help/ideas appreciated.

Thanks

John

How bad can the MPG be? When I saw the title I thought "That'll be a v8 saloon" but now, I'm not so sure.. something like a VXR8 would be good.

What sort of mileage will you be doing? Would mid 20's mpg be ok? Or are you wanting more like 40mpg daily?

If it's the latter then I think you'll seriously struggle to get anything as remotely interesting or exciting as your V8 Mustang.

For example, my 5.7 litre Camaro will generally do 22-24mpg on 95 RON. This is normal commuting style driving/short distance and giving it some welly! On a run it'll easily do 26mpg and driven carefully 30-31mpg. Lowest I've seen has been 19mpg.... but that was when using it daily to the station (3 miles) during the dead of winter when it was only ever in minus degree's out whenever I started it.

So long as you don't mind loosing a bit of comfort I'd say take a look at a proper lightweight sports car if you want greater mpg.

For this money I think I'd be looking at a Lotus Europa S, VX220 (Turbo), Elise or a very tidy Honda engined GTM Libra. They'll be raw, but a lot of fun and should offer 35-45mpg ability.

If you still want more economy then you'll have to trade a bit of speed and opt for something like a Brabus Roadster. 50-60mpg possible from these and a remap will see 120hp (similar power to weight as a S1 Elise).

Lastly, have you considered LPG? It can make vehicles far more affordable to run. So you could almost run a 5.4 litre Supercharged V8 Ford Lightning with an LPG setup. Still have it making 450-500hp and have the same fuel costs as a Focus ST pence per mile, possible slightly better.

An Elise and then borrow/hire a car for when you need back seats/boot.

A two year old Mazda 3 mps can be had for that money and kicks out 265hp stock, 300+ with a remap. Easy to live with daily fun four door!

Can you get a decent 996 for that? Or would you worry about that if you left it in a dodgy car park?

I use an S197 v8 GT auto as my daily drive, on average I get around 18 - 20mpg, on a long run between 28 and 30. It makes a fantastic every day car, I can't think of any drawbacks at all. There are some bargains to be had at the moment as well.I'd go automatic as well, far better than a manual imho smile
