Daytona 24 Hour onboard 997 Cup with myself
Discussion
Few laps on board, really great circuit, banking is really cool! First few laps on it is a very weird experience, as the G force is completely different to normal. Clocking over 180mph on the banking!

I was actually there yesterday watching the testing.
It was great to hear the sound of proper racing engines again, 24 degrees and sunshine helped too
.
There's lots of local interest in Patrick Dempsey's team running rather incongrous RX8s amongst the blue blood Europeans and V8 heavy metal.

FWIW, those RX8s aren't really RX8s, they're tube frames with a silhouette body and a Mazda rotary engine. I think it's a little unfair to allow fake lookalike cars to race in the same category as actual GTs based on road cars, but GrandAm is run by NASCAR, and if you're going to complain about that series you'd start with the hideous Daytona Prototypes. Then again it's made up for by the fact that they do actually put on a good show, even if no one actually goes to any of the races. There were also some 'Corvettes' running with mid-engines and a regualar narrow prototype screen.
All a mystery to a travelling Brit!

'Access all areas' for $15 for the test weekend meant I was able to get up close to the cars in the garage. The space frame RX8s clearly get a big rules break. Its been a long while since I heard a racing rotary scream though, not since Le Mans in the early 90's!

Yep, the US does treat you much better when you attend races. At ALMS races pit access is also only an extra few dollars and you really can go almost anywhere. There were also some 'Corvettes' running with mid-engines and a regualar narrow prototype screen.

Those Corvettes are new Daytona Prototypes, and do look a lot better than the masses of Rileys. Hopefully they go well in the race but I read the other day that they're severely limited in top speed and can't crack 190 mph.
Enjoy!

Great to watch. Also nice to see the season getting going again.
I have a q. why the go pro camera as opposed to some sort of v box device? I'm sure there's plenty of "high end" data acquisition going on but doesn't that system have it's own video?
2nd q. What are the vertical bars on the screen pax side for?

king insane. It's like 20 years ago English teachers decided to tell kids that they should never use me or I but only ever myself.
